Short and sweet. A slow burn as far as a novella can be. The writing and characterization is okay.

It’s the quiet ones that can sneak up on you.
What happens when you cross a traumatized worldly photographer who just wants a little escape, with a shy fragile but resilient artist who just wants to be understood?
Something quite impressive, if I do say so myself.
Understated and thoughtful.
Touching and poignant.
Emotional and sexy.
Two people separated by age, experience, and vastly different personalities find a way to connect, and this was quite the beautiful, slow burn novella.

The story centered on Alex, a photographer who decided to buy a ramshackle house on the beach in New Zealand to escape from a traumatic event in the past. The story is a slow, internal realization of himself while he deals with his pain and his curiosity of Joe, a comic book artist, who he first sees sleeping on a couch in the sunroom of the house he ends up buying.
As Alex tries to get to know Joe, who is stand-offish, they realize that each has a past they have to work through and maybe they are perfect for one another.
It's a short read with a lot of internal dialogue, but in the end, you feel the connection between the two men and hope that in the future, they can make it together.

3.75 stars. A lovely atmospheric novella about two lost souls finding solace in each other.

A lovely, wind-swept romance between a photographer and a comic book artist that made me want to pack up, rent a cottage by the sea, and get drunk with my love. Nothing particularly happens (which has left me intrigued to read Lee Welch's much-more-plotty-looking novels) and that really doesn't matter as it's just comforting and soft and bittersweet and everything I was in the mood for.
(Heads up: the only reason I marked this down was the rather abrupt, kind of random sexual dynamic. It doesn't dominate the book, but it’s worth checking the content warnings before reading)

A five-star rating from me is just an indication of how much I enjoyed this romance. I like slow-burn romance between damaged, real people and stories with a strong sense of place and this delivered magnificently on all counts.
