Cute book about a woman who goes to work on an oyster farm - she should have added more about the biology and history of oysters, as she alluded quite constantly to doing that research. At the end, she even makes a primer for chefs and waitstaff - I would have loved to have seen that interspersed. But still, gives you a better appreciation for the bivalve as you suck 'em back at a restaurant.

This is about a woman who took a year off her cushy writing job to become an oyster farmer. If that sounds boring, then this book probably isn't for you. But if you're curious like me about the oyster industry, then this book delivers. I was a little apprehensive that reading about the gritty details of oyster farming would turn me off from oysters, but this gives a sometimes glamorous look at the life of the oyster farmers at Island Creek Oyster farms. I know it made me crave the briny little bivalves even more.

I liked that the end of each chapter included a little recipe contributed by someone related to the oyster farm. The recipes range from a simple mignonette to more complex things like oyster casseroles.

It was wonderful reading about people that love and grow oysters, from the perspective of someone that was learning the process. I also liked reading about all these chefs and restaurants I've known for years.

Easy read. Kept my attention. It wasn’t another lecture series on oysters, it dives into how they get to your plate, the people that put them there and the backbreaking work behind it. Fascinating

I liked Shucked - I think Byers Murray did a good job of detailing and exposing the daily life of on an Oyster farm but the book felt unbalanced when she discussed her personal life.

Quick review: Do you like to eat oysters? Read this. Do you like New England AND oysters? Go on and put it on hold at your library. Have you had Island Creek Oysters (and love them)? Just go on and buy it.

Longer review: I first discovered this because after trying Island Creek oysters at a local sea-to-table restaurant, I wanted to know more and saw the book on their website. My goal is to take a farm tour this year, which may or may not happen, so I decided to read it now. It's a good balance of memoir and non-fiction (same yes but different!). We get to know the author enough to be able to imagine ourselves as readers in her position as a new farm worker.

My only issue is that I wish there were images throughout vs. at the end. I read the Kindle version so maybe it is throughout in the print edition? I think reading this will help me understand more of the farm tour whenever I do go.

I love oysters. I love Island Creek. I'm buying this book.
