Just okay. Unpredictable which I liked but the ending didn’t make a lot of sense. Still entertaining.

Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I liked the overall story and the characters were great, especially Lena, the main character. I loved how the story unfolded through her eyes and it was easy to see how she made the choices she did throughout the book.

I was really disappointed with the ending, it felt so rushed and
I’m annoyed we don’t know what happened to Erin, even though it’s because of her Lena is safe. Erin deserved a better ending even if she was sort of deceitful, she was a good friend to both Desiree and Lena.
. I also could not stand the repeated phrase “shitnuts.” The first time was fine, it was overused immediately after that. It would take me out of the story because I hated it so much. I was also annoyed at Lena’s wrist itching anytime she was stressed but never having a proper explanation as to why, especially with a character who never minded giving us backstory.

TL;DR the story and characters definitely made this books enjoyable. But the ending wasn’t super satisfying and felt extremely rushed.

This one is a great ride!

Desiree Pierce is found dead on a playground in the Bronx. Everyone assumes she died of a self-inflicted overdose.

Everyone, that is, except her sister, Lena, who knows her celebrity sister would never kill herself like that. Besides, Desiree hated needles with a passion.

As Lena strives to find out what really happened, the story takes us through twists and turns galore. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, nope, you haven’t.

Intensely good read. 4 stars.

If you like constant and creative similes, then this book is for you.
A sampling:

“Her eyes were as dry as my sex life.”

“It was gigantic, the tub alone bigger than the average male ego.”

“I’d hit up Google at four in the morning like I was making a booty call.”

“A fake smile plastered on like drywall mud”

And my personal favorite, “The smell of alcohol on his breath was as faint as a damsel in distress.”

I can see how this might not be for everyone, particularly people who like their thrillers to have lots of twists and over the top stuff happening, but I thought this was a solid book. While the thriller/mystery plot had some holes in it, I very much appreciated that the character arcs were fully realized, and that our main character actually had an arc. She also had one of the strangest sidekicks I've ever read in a novel, and I appreciate that.

Our main character is Lena, the half-sister of Desiree Pierce, ex-reality TV star. Lena stopped talking to her sister two years before when her destructive habits became too much for Lena, who vowed she wasn't going to help her sister inflict harm on herself anymore. The book opens with Lena finding out from the news that her sister is dead, and the headline that is advertising it is a vulgar one.

When her sister's cause of death is released, Lena doesn't buy it. She KNOWS Desiree would never have used heroin because she was so afraid of needles. It was kind of neat how Garrett slowly had Lena finding out what was going on. She conducts a very informal investigation, mostly just talking to the people she knows and putting pieces together. If the cops would have been investigating, they would have done a much better job (probably) but they aren't even investigating the death as anything other than an overdose by a poor little rich girl.

I think the author does need to lean a little less on repetition. One shitnuts was more than enough. And the MC's itchy wrist was never explained. I actually found the wrist more annoying.

I will be reading more books by this author!

Chipping Away at Mt. TBR, July 2022—Book 3/31

Very “ok”. Modern mystery thriller. I’m not a supper fan of the “INSTA famous victim” trope. I also felt like there was a suspicious amount of product placement. Again not like someone else wouldn’t like it, it just wasn’t for me.
