I don’t usually comment on or review memoirs especially ones as painful as this but there’s little to recommend it when it comes to the writing and the content is too awful to stomach without that.

This is a challenging read but I’m so grateful that I read it. I’m in awe of the author’s resilience, bravery, and “candor” in the way she tells her story.
I noticed many of the lower rated reviews came from wanting the author to share more about growing up in the children of god cult (despite it taking up half of the book). Promotional materials make it clear that the book is about her experience in the army and the thread connecting the two.
I’m not sure how she could’ve been more honest with how she shared her experience growing up, and to ask for more sounds a bit like wanting “trauma porn”.

what a biography!
the first half of the book was about the cult The Children of God and that is also what drew me to get this audiobook and I was really intrigued with that part.
the second part was about the author's time in the army which I didn't expect to be as detailed as it was.
while I was amazed and appalled at how women are probably still treated in the (U.S.) military, this was not what I originally signed up for.
my rating does not reflect how I'd rate the author's personal history (because how could I? not my place.) but rather my expectations on what the topics would be.

I really enjoyed the first half, about the authors time in the Children of God cult and leaving it. The second half was largely about her time in Army. While it was an interesting read, it wasn’t what I was expecting and generally is less my cup of tea. There was interesting commentary near the end about her work studying cults - I would have enjoyed hearing more of that!
