I have mixed feelings on this one. I loved the stories, and the structures, the little magical bits. Yet I had serious problems keeping characters apart. Even when the story would switch the voice would sound the same. I could put the book down for 15 minutes and come back and wouldn't be clear on who was who. This is a problem I rarely have, especially with short stories. I don't know if it was just me or the pacing of the stories, which in parts was almost frenzied and in others very slow.
I'm stuck in the middle on this one. I don't know if I loved it or I didn't. I certainly don't regret reading it, that's for sure. I enjoyed it overall.

The only way I can really think to accurately describe my feelings towards this collection of short stories is that I have fallen in love. It started with the first story and ever so quietly and gently my love grew with every soul touching sentence that Oyeyemi has crafted.

Each story in this collection explores characters that are trying to obtain something. They are searching and wishing and wondering and experiencing. Their feelings towards their wants are varied and different. They approach them in different ways and learn different lessons.

I began each story a little curious and a little bit skeptical that I could love and want these new characters and their stories as much as I did their predecessors and each time I came to the end of a tale I found myself mourning the loss of their story. In a twist of complete genius Oyeyemi crafted this book into something that I dearly wanted and could not quite have.

The characters themselves are as diverse as the objects of their desires, which thrilled me to no end. Many characters made appearances in other's stories giving me glimpses of how their lives were progressing which helped ease the feelings of loss each time a story came to its end and revealed it's secret.

What can I say about Oyeyemi? She hits all the right spots for me. Lush, gorgeous prose. Stories that are always a bit fantastical. Queer relationships aplenty. I just love her writing. Didn't give her five stars for this one because I felt some of the stories were a bit long, and the one with puppeteers wasn't actually all that interesting to me. But in general, this is a very strong collection.

I had higher hopes for this. Still one of my favorite authors. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for short stories that require focused attention.

Short stories that are hard to put down!

I would have given this a higher rating, but I just cannot get into short stories. I've tried several collections, and they just aren't going to make my favorites list. Regardless of how I feel about short stories in general, this was a book that was very intriguing.

Most stories have a small amount of cross over with the other stories in this collection, but each story has some sort of key in it. Each story may also spook readers a little bit. These aren't sleep-with-the-light-on scary stories, but there was definitely some creepiness to each story.

I was impressed with this author's writing as well. I will be looking for more by Helen Oyeyemi.

Enjoyed reading this. I was impressed by how different each of these stories, and the characters, are from one another. That made it all the more intriguing when a character from an earlier story pops up in a later one.

despite having the kind of solid writing I like to read, it borders on esoteric and abstract to a point where Oyeyemi can lose the reader's attention. some stories captivated me, but they were either something to savor or slog through. this book definitely doesn't fall into the mass appeal category, and yet has the kind of imaginative ideas you typically only find in sci-fi/fantasy or young adult fiction.

Not worth the hype for me, and not nearly as good as A Tale for the Time Being.
Diverse cast of characters: Yes

Let me start by saying, I love Oyeyemi's writing and when I heard she was releasing a collection of short stories I was excited to be transported to different places in each of these stories. Needless to say, these stories did not resonate with me. There were one and two stories that I did like but didn't necessarily moved me.

I felt the stories were all over the place and I could not keep up with the characters that kept popping up in the other stories. There was little cohesiveness- yes, I understand it is a collection of short stories but still, they all felt shallow and disjointed.

I wish this could have been a positive review. I did like some of the stories but not enough to make it an enjoyable read.
