I'm still fascinated with the imagination of the author in addition to the illustrations in the book. However, the story itself does not wow me as much. There are actions and political intrigued but there is something about the story that does not completely sold itself to me.

The second novel in Scott Westerfeld's steampunk retelling of World War I is an improvement over book 1, which didn't develop its two main characters into likable people until the very end. Here it's easier to root for them right from the start, give or take a needless love triangle along the way. The worldbuilding continues to impress, and I look forward to seeing how the story concludes.

I think I enjoyed this book even more than the first one. Maybe because it's been so long since I've read Leviathan. Or because it was a lot more fast paced and it was easier to get back into the world because it wasn't brand new. Either way, it was fantastic! I like where the story is going and the pictures were rally enjoyable.

The luster and innovation of this twisted World War I Europe has lost its sheen in this book for me. The world grabbed me in the first one but little has changed but for a change of scenery and a combination of the separate mechanical vs biological worlds. It was not enough to keep me entertainer and I will not be finishing the trilogy unfortunately.

I have to agree with Mark. I tore through this one and found it even more entertaining and absorbing than Leviathan . Westerfeld's imagination is truly impressive and I loved all the crazy Clanker machines he invented for Istanbul. I also liked how the relationship between Deryn and Alek continues to evolve. Like Tally in the Uglies series, Deryn is a seriously kick ass girl who is absolutely fearless, tough and smart. My one caveat is this book is likely to be a tough sell to less fluent readers. Between Deryn's Brit slang and all of Westerfeld's invented beasties and machines it might be a little hard to read for some students.
