[My review contains mentions of fat phobia, so take care of yourself if it's sensitive to you] I've been thinking about what I eat since I probably was born. I went to a dietician in primary school because my mother was concerned about the shape of my belly. I've been told numerous times growing up that I was fat, that I was wrong, and on one occasion, that I was a pig. I went to the US on exchange where my digestion was completely fucked over, but hey, at least I lost weight! I then promptly gained it alongside the diagnosis of my depression last year.
Just Eat It is a breath of fresh air. It's the book I needed much earlier in my life. It's the book that re-affirmed the things I've been thinking about for over a year now: fat phobia is the only reason why I've ever been forced through the aforementioned experiences. This isn't my fault. I'm not lazy, nor a glutton: I'm fat and that's that.
This is just my first read of the book, to get my head around some of the concepts, but I'll be using it in depth for the rest of 2019 and hopefully, this will finally push me away from the constant fears that I've had about being ugly and undesirable. Now, I could definitely do with a slice of pizza.

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a non fiction book all about intuitive eating. It encourages you to not feel guilty about what you are eating. There are lots of exercises to do and things to reflect on. I read this from cover to cover for the purpose of this review but it is really a book that you need to take your time over, do the exercises and redefine your relationship with food.

The book says everything that you probably already knew, but did not want to admit about diet, diet culture and our culture. Ends with a bang! "Make no mistake, food and body hang-ups are intentional and deliberate distractions engineered by a capitalist patriarchal society that thrives on insecurity [...] keeping women from realizing their full power."
You might feel better and inspired after finishing this book.

I like the concept of this book but it felt still very negative about food and the relationship women have with it!

I read this in January when ‘dry january’ and ‘Veganuary’ were terms constantly bandied about. This book calls ‘bull shit!’ On diet culture and ‘nutri bollocks’. The book verified what I already knew about diets and behaviours around food, but for those who have lost their way or feeling the pressure of January to ‘detox’ (“ juices and cleanses and special supplements can’t ‘detox’ you, your liver and kidneys do that on their own. Every time you poop or pee - that’s a detox.) after Christmas it’s great. Laura takes you on a journey to k ow your body, listen to what it wants and needs in terms of nutrients and forget about how you ‘should’ feel after that hotdog/burger/doughnut.
There are lots of tests and challenges which I skipped over as I felt I didn’t needed them, but I imagine day are good to compound the learning.
We need more books like ‘Just Eat It’ rather than healthy eating, diet books.

I want to give this more than 5 ⭐s because I loved it SO MUCH. I have been on this body positivity journey for about 6 months now, and I'd heard about intuitive eating from following Laura on IG. But this book was absolutely ground-breaking for me. I physically cannot express how much I loved this. PLEASE for the love of God, read this book.

I think this is a brilliant book for those wanting to deal with any issues around food or weight. However, as someone with a disability some of the ideas in here are a little trickier to get on board with (though I know Laura Thomas frequently addresses this). All in all, a great book and loads of great points to take away. It just makes total sense.

Very informative and great book about intuitive eating. Learning to love my body and treat it with more respect as well as viewing diet culture as a social justice issue. Highly recommend for anyone who struggles with body image and has an uncomfortable/confusing relationship with food and eating ❤️
