A messy mix of food, love, and burnout—served lukewarm when it could’ve been sizzling.

Tart: Misadventures of an Anonymous Chef

Bored with corporate life, our narrator trades the office for the kitchen, chasing passion over paychecks. What follows is a behind-the-scenes journey through the highs and lows of the culinary world: the exhaustion of burnout, the thrills and pitfalls of romance, and the constant temptation of chasing perfection one plate at a time.

While the premise had all the right ingredients, the execution left me wanting more. Still, it’s an honest look at the messy balance of work, love, and ambition. ★★¾

It’s not perfect and not as pacey as I imagined either but overall still an enjoyable read. Not as horny as I thought it would be (sigh). The chapters also read more like short stories if that’s your thing (it’s not my thing).

Amazing memoir.
Great passages but also so well put together as a whole. She sets up jokes or scenarios well in advance and so the pay off is so clever.
She also GENUINELY captures the joy and pain of being a chef in London.
I’m so happy that this book exists and is as fantastic as it is.
I enjoyed this book as much as any other this year
