We actually own the last movie on DVD, and really loved it. It was interesting to see how much liberty the scriptwriters took with the story. Fortunately, I looked at when the story was originally published (1905) so I was not surprised at some of the language in it (there seeming to be little social difference between slaves and servants, for example), and not really surprised that, while the ending in both the book and the movie was ultimately happy, the book was also more tragic. But that was the reality of 120 years ago.

After I finished, learning about the life trajectory of the author, it was clear that her own life was an inspiration for the story. Nevertheless, I found myself more than a little disturbed by the classism that it was steeped in. While I appreciated the theme of strength, there was so much of it that was so dated that I found myself questioning having any children read it, unless a conversation happened afterward. But, not having kids, I have no idea how common that might be.

Despite all that, I did like it, because it got me thinking about a lot. And wondering if I'll enjoy the movie as much anymore.

A classic that just gets better with age.

Honestly I was bored listening to this book. The main character really reminded me of a character I really love from a show but other then that I didn’t connect with it. It’s about a rich girl who becomes poor and then I finds out she was rich all along. When she’s poor she’s treated badly and sent to live in an attic all by herself. She has an over active imagination that really reminded me of myself. It was good just not a favorite.

I was supposed to read this book in school, but I never did. I love the movie adaptation, so I wanted to read it now. I see why I had trouble with it when I was younger. It was so hard to get into this book. It seems short, and I thought it'd be a quick read. But there are a lot of words and a lot of imagination is needed to really feel the spirit of the novel. Plus, for much of the book, it's a child being starved and neglected, so not the happiest subject matter. However, the ending was really sweet and made me happy. I'm glad I stuck with it, and I can now say I've read the book, though I still love the movie more.

I am fairly sure this book has not aged well, but FHB was part of my childhood.
