I’ve been reading some books that were childhood favorites and this one did not hold up. I can see why I liked it then, but the lack of character arc - that Sara starts and ends perfect - is just the most glaring of its faults.

This really is a beautiful story. I read it outloud to my 7 year old (LOVED IT) and my 4 1/2 year old (enjoyed it - but got a bit bored). Sarah Crew is such an admirable character - so full of the values I want my own daughter to have. The scene with the buns and the "beggar girl" were absolutely heart-wrenching and even my 7 year old understood how much strength it took.

The middle did get a bit long - even for me. But the last 1/3 really picked up and even though I know it would all be fine and grand for her in the end, I was still completely sucked in and my daughter and I had to finish it before she caught the bus today. Excellent characters and a wonderfully happy ending.

so i really had to read nonfiction books for school (i read to many chapter book stuff that now all i have left is 3 more nonfiction books-) but yeah this was interesting

Read this book many many many times growing up.

I was first introduced to this wonderful children's book when my fourth grade teacher read it to my class. I fell in love with it then, and I still love it as an adult. Every little girl should read this classic story at least once in her life. It is a tale of a strong little girl who begins the story as a wealthy, excessively pampered child who still manages to treat others with kindness and respect. After a horrific change in fortune, Sara Crewe's life changes dramatically, but through the magic of her imagination and her own strong character Sara is able to endure her hardships with a strength that proves that one doesn't have to have wealth and privilege to be a princess. I just adore this story so much. Five huge stars!

2018 Audio Update -- This is only a review of the audio book version of this story. I've already declared my everlasting love for this story in my review of the kindle version. I adore this story. I loved it as a child. I love it as an adult. This is my first opportunity to hear it read as an audio book. My fourth grade teacher read this to my class, and I can't read this story without hearing her voice reading this delightful story. For that reason I was a bit worried that hearing another's interpretation of the text would bother me. I needn't have worried. Colleen Prendergast did a FANTASTIC job. She was able to capture the young voice of the main character of this story. Although the book is told in third person narration, it has the feel of being told by a child, not an adult. This was felt through the audio narration. I was enchanted. It was a delightful experience. I highly recommend this version of the story. Five stars. It was amazing!
