A beautifully illustrated edition of Neil Gaiman's amazing novel!

It's been about 2 years since I read the traditional novel of The Graveyard Book, but I can tell you that I like this format so much more.

There are different illustrators for each chapter which really adds to the sense of Bod growing up. It's also much easier to understand what is going and how creatures were meant to be envisioned.

Even though the story felt exactly the same, the graphic novel adds more of a spooky atmosphere to it all.

A charming graphic novel which implements many different artists' work while still impressively remaining cohesive. I've not read the original book but definitely want to as well as dipping into Vol. 2 after this! I especially loved the portrayal of Silas but really there's a lot of gold to be found in the adventures of Bod and his graveyard companions. Very intrigued to read more and grateful to have found this!

Love this book so much but I was borrowing it from a friend and hadn’t read much over a long period of time so I gave it back

Reading 2019
Book 123: The Graveyard Book Vol. 1 by Neil Gaiman

Another graphic novel to add to my collection. This one is an adaptation of a The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. It is a Newbery Prize winner, reviewed for 5th grade and older, ages 10 and up.

The story opens with the murder of a family. the toddler in the family escapes death by wandering off into a graveyard. Ghosts agree to be his parents. He is given the name Nobody (Bod, for short) Owens. The killer continues to seek this boy to finish the job. The book is mostly about the adventures that Bod has in the cemetery where he lives. There is another volume to the story, not sure I will read it.

Interestingly the graphic novel is reviewed for ages 8 and older, grades 3 and up. The murder of Bod's family is the first thing in the book. There are slit throats shown in the illustrations, so if your 8 year olds can handle that the rest is just a boy having adventures with all sorts of supernatural beings. I did enjoy reading this after it got started. The first few pages I was unsure if I was going to finish, but it picked up pretty quickly.

“The knife had a handle of polished black bone, and a blade finer and sharper than any razor. If it sliced you, you might not even know you had been cut, not immediately. The knife had done almost everything I was brought to that house to do, and both the bland and the handle were wet.”

A young boy’s family is murdered in the comfort of their beds in the thick of night. The boy is awakened by a noise and, in his mischievous state, decides to explore. He crawls down the stairs and out the open door, following the noise to the local graveyard – completely unaware that the murderer is in pursuit.

The opening line of the book plus the quick book talk (what I call my “shelf talk” since it has to be short and sweet when one is standing in library stacks with a tween who “wants something good to read”) tell you why I adore this story. Toss in that Nobody Owens gets to be raised by ghosts? What a fantastical, entertaining tale! Then, the addition of the illustrations in this graphic format? Just WOW! The wonderful artwork made a story I love even more endearing. Like the full print novel format, this is a book for all ages.

Precioso, muy recomendado a partir de 12 años. Ahora toca empezar el segundo.

I’ve not read the Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and was excited to read the first volume of the graphic novel. I’ve read a few graphic novels but those have all been for books I’d read before and I wanted to see what it was like going in without any idea of what was going to happen next.

Over the course of the novel we get to know Bod, a boy who after a terrible incident came to live in a graveyard. The ghosts took him under their wing and raised them as one of them. With a vampire as a guardian tasked with bringing Bod human necessities like food, Bod has an upbringing not like that of most other children. Each chapter tells a story of its own being independent of the others but at the same time drawing upon similar elements and all tie together nicely. From ghosts to ghouls, witches and the Macabre – this book covers a lot of supernatural beings whilst brings it all together in one lovely, easy to read graphic novel.

This book is wonderfully illustrated. The drawings are all eerily beautiful and I can see why the original book was turned into a graphic novel. There are seven different illustrators contributing to this volume and whilst each has their own distinct style, each one works so well with the others. There is a sense of cohesion between the chapters and their illustrations. The stories are very easy to follow and you do get an extra something by being able to visually follow the plot.

After finishing this book I was eager to find out what happens next – just why Bod’s family was targeted and how everything was going to play out – so I borrowed a copy of the novel which this graphic novel was based. I was surprised by just how faithfully this book followed the original.

I recommend this graphic novel for fans of the original story and anyone who enjoys beautifully gothic illustrations. It’s a great adaptation and an interesting interpretation of the novel. I also think people who aren’t traditionally comic/graphic novel readers (like myself) will enjoy it for the story and the gorgeous way it was translated into a visual medium.
