Me And Emma

Elizabeth Flock

3.7 AVERAGE

Narrated by the unreliable eight-year-old Carrie, Me & Emma is a truly heartbreaking story of sisters who are shaped by tragic events. This is not an easy book to read because of the content, but Flock does an excellent job drawing the reader in and pulling at your heartstrings. Me & Emma is a worthwhile read for anyone who works with children who have experienced trauma.

Disturbing and sad, but wonderfully written. The twist broke my heart. Trigger warning: Physical abuse.

Awesome, intriguing, well-developed characters; even secondary characters were fantastic. This story had a twist I didn't see coming.
All-in-all: A must read!

I often laughed reading Carrie’s child like and stubborn perspective on different situations. And I loved that she said cain’t and git. However the overall tone of the book was dark with physical, mental, and sexual abuse woven throughout the novel. This is a fascinating take on how children cope with extensively traumatic events.

If you liked The Glass Castle you will more than likely enjoy this book from a child’s point of view.

The big surprise ending was not much of a surprise, as I had it figured out about 30 pages into the book, but I thought this was a well told story of a sad situation. All too many children are growing up in abuse and poverty, and although this was at times difficult to read about, I thought the telling of Carrie's plight was well done.

Overall, I liked the book. It was just fairly predictable.

I hated it and loved it at the same time. A book that made me wonder, made me made, and the end understand. But the ending still pissed me off!!
