This book was well written, but it's hard to say that I liked it because the subject was so difficult. It is about a young girl who is being abused by her stepfather, and it doesn't leave much to the imagination. It was a very disturbing book.
If it weren't for the entirely unexpected twist at the end I might not have liked this book. It was just so damn depressing. That doesn't make it a bad book, just lowers my enjoyment of it. The twist, while not any less depressing, made me reevaluate some things I had thought about the characters.
On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, Me & Emma by Elizabeth Flock is a bruised apple in slices. The slices become ships or log cabins or an upside down frown. The fruit is still sweet even though the texture has gone mooshy.
Me & Emma is told from the perspective of Carrie, the big sister. She knows life is hard for her family and she does her best to look after Emma and herself and her momma. But Richard, her momma' new husband, is meannnnn.
My friend recommended this book to me. Despite loving the cover, I don't think I would have picked it up without the recommendation. She told me that the story sneaks up on you. And it did. I think this book was so well written, and I think anyone who works with children should take a look at it. It's not graphic, but you are able to recognize the existence of abuse. Also, I really struggled to choose a food to compare this book to because I didn't want to misrepresent the realism and yet hope that exists.

Wow! I thought I had this book all figured out. I got to 95% complete and was totally floored. I love it when a book takes a complete left turn. This is a great read and highly recommended.
Well written and fast-paced. I admit, I didn't see the twist coming, but then again I'm always kinda slow on subtle hints.
This book was an interesting read. It is a really sad story and the ending was a little surprising - I hadn't expected it to end that way. It was really upsetting to realise that abuse can happen but no-one will intervene - they will just let it go on. I did feel that the ending cheated me slightly but I always like to know what happened to the characters and for it to finish happily (which is not always the case).
This book was a beautifully expressed tale of the woes of a young abused child... The story was captivating, although I must admit that the ending was predictable - having read the comments here on the "unexpected ending/twist" I cast aside my prediction (which was correct in the first instance) thinking that there must be some more complicated twist at the end, but it turned out I was right all along. Having said that, I am pretty good at predicting storylines for both books and films/tv, so maybe I was just a bit too clever about it. The book is so well written, that you wouldn't normally suspect anything that would lead to a shocking twist. All in all, this was a good read, very expertly written from the viewpoint of a child. I recommend it!
The end was a little predictable with respect to Richard and I have to say, I'm disappointed about Emma, but it makes so much sense in retrospect and makes me all the more sad for Carrie. A very heavy read but a very engaging novel. I couldn't put it down.
I liked this book. I saw the big twist ending coming from page 15, which was disappointing because I wanted to be surprised, but it gave me an interesting lense reading the book. Me & Emma is about two sisters in the country who are undergoing abuse at the hands of their stepfather. Written from an 8-year- old's point of view, much of the underworkings of adult life and themes had to be inferred by the reader. I am an Elementary Education major and found it to be a great insight into the way a child might think about their home life as well as cope with grief and hardship. I read the entire book in 3 days. THREE.
