Love the character of Bob and all his iterations. Exited to see where the series goes from here.

Fun! A good friend recommended this to me shortly after it came out, and I have finally gotten around to reading it, thanks to book club. This was a breezy read with occasional bits of pop culture reference that I enjoyed.
Bob, or rather Robert Johanssen, just sold his company and signed up for a cryostasis program in the event of his untimely death... only to die in a freak accident later that day. He wakes up over 100 years in the future to find out he is now a brain-in-a-computer, humanity has let many of its worst excesses run rampant, and he is being tested as a possible ship-brain to help humanity get out of Sol in an exploration arms race. Things happen, and Bob, as the computerized Robert calls himself, is headed out among the cosmos to seek out good locations to colonize, and sources of raw materials with which to replicate and build.
This was a lot of fun, and I will seek out the rest of the series because it ends a little abruptly, and there is a lot more happening that I want to see through to the end.

I expected to be a quick read and didn't have very high expectations. The book was far better than I thought it would be. The author had clearly done his research in both planetary science and astrophysics. The transition of the main character from cryogenically frozen human to artificial intelligence was plausible. As I got further into the book, it was more challenging to keep track of the Bob forks/clones but the author was able to get me all the way through. It was clear that the author was more Star Trek than Star Wars (but pleasantly so); there were references to Aliens and other SciFi movies as well. My only "nit" was a reference to FTP (rather than a secure copy protocol like scp).

An amazing universe has been built, just to have Taylor to fight to find common tropes to follow for each book. The writing is good enough that I will still read more entries in the series, but I will be slightly disappointed each time this happens.

Just wasn't vibing for me. The audiobook is definitely as good as everyone says it is, the narrator does an incredible job, but it just wasn't working for me personally. I have the same issue with the Murderbot audiobooks where I'm like, this is objectively great but for some reason the more detailed discussions of robot stuff just goes in one ear and out the other and I end up losing the plot. Oh well.

Lighthearted read. Fun exploration of the concept of mind uploading and uplifting. A bit boring halfway towards the end though. Characters get a bit bland after a while
