I love this! I’m such trash for Bucky Barnes and the Winter Soldier and this is no exception! Definitely clear that this was the source material from the MCU but still different I love it!

You guys, I'm kind of scared that I have friendships that will not endure my opinion about this book, but I just gotta speak my own truth.

Spoiler
I just thought this was rill boring!! I couldn't believe how long it was! Or how little I cared about all the Nazi backstory! I cared sooo little omg. IDK I guess this was rebooting/recontextualizing an existing, confusing canon? Brubaker... probably did the best he could with it? But honestly just like... so many convoluted threads happening and yet all of them seemed boring. Why. How. There is literally a frozen-in-stasis brainwashed guy with a metal arm. How is that boring?

IDK, it just wasn't... fun. I guess I mostly prefer fun superhero comics to these serious, angsty ones.

Also, Captain America is easily my least favorite Avenger, so I'm sure that didn't help my feelings about this at all.

SORRY I HOPE WE CAN STILL BE FRIENDS. I STILL THINK THE MOVIE LOOKS PRETTY DOPE.

I really enjoyed this book.

This is about Captain America trying to deal with the Red Skull and Lukin as they wake up the Winter Soldier to wreak havoc in the city. As Captain America fights to save the city, him and the rest of S.H.I.E.L.D try to figure out how best to stop the Winter Soldier. When Captain America learns that the Winter Soldier might be his best friend he will do what he can to stop him and help him.

I really liked that Ed was able to keep you in suspense when you get to the end of an issue and makes you want to keep reading to figure out what was going to happen next. It kept me wanting to turn the pages just because I wanted to know what was going to happen to the characters and what was going on in the story.

I like Ed's writing because it keeps me wanting to read and it is very hard to put down because I want to know what is going to happen and am always hooked into the story from the beginning.

5/1/15:
So now that it's been almost exactly a year, it was time to re-read this so I can actually continue on with the series. Plus, I think it might have helped me out of my current reading slump.

My opinion hasn't changed much since the first time I read it. I still really enjoyed it. I will say I was a bit less confused this time, and I think I appreciated it a little more.

I did spend more time comparing it to the movie, which was sort of fun to do. Not in a negative way, but sort of realizing that the movie added Black Widow and had her basically replace Agent 13. Plus it was sort of interesting how in this book, Cap and Falcon have known each other for a while, but in the movie it's how they met. Plus, you know: Hail Hydra.

So it was a fun reread, and I can't wait to finally continue on with this series.

5/6/14:
Yes, the movie prompted me to read this. I loved the movie, so I wanted to read the original version. I've been collecting the paperbacks for this series.

My knowledge on Captain America comes from the movies, honestly. Luckily, they are incredibly helpful. I was not that lost with this. The only thing that threw me off slightly was that apparently Red Skull had been using a clone of Steve Rogers as a body? That must have been an interesting storyline. Oh well.

Overall, really liked this. The story of the Winter Soldier and how he came to be is really gripping. It was well thought out, and really emotional. I got very invested in Bucky as a character. He's a wonderful anti-hero of sorts.

I also really loved how emotional this was for Steve. He's not just this big buff guy who throws his shield at everyone. There was a lot of psychological depth for him.

The artwork was just so-so. I wasn't crazy about it, but I didn't hate it. So it really wasn't that big of a deal.

I liked that the movie really was very different from this, so I wasn't seeing the same story twice (not that I really have a problem with that).

Overall, it was good. Don't know what else to say, other than I need to grab the rest of this series.

I came to Captain America late because I thought, erroneously, that he was jingoistic and gung-ho; more Rambo than FDR. But he is very much an idealized version of America during World War II; who stepped up to save civilization from fascism; to defend the dignity and worth of every individual from being merely a means to an end; to save the weak from the tyranny of the strong. Perhaps a little less in this text than in the MCU. But in both, Steve Rogers became a superman to fight the ubermench. And his best friend became a Winter Soldier; a man who does things in the shadows subject to no civilized check. The moral complexity of that is fascinating.

This is a story without much of the moral complexity or ideological conflict simmering through the larger story. This Winter Soldier is simply a means to other men's ends; this Captain doesn't spend much time debating his moral obligations. But it is the story of a man who thought he was alone in a fundamental way finding that he was not in the worst way possible, and trying to rise to that challenge.

This Nick Fury is like until the Hoff and through this book I learned that I can't handle Nick Fury as anyone but Samuel L. Jackson these days.

Amazing. I'd heard great things about this series, and they were all true. Loved it even more after seeing the movie. (I always like to compare and contrast.) My one and only complaint is that I didn't want it to end!

I enjoyed this, though the first half was a bit of a slog as it sets up the rest of the story. I was also a little disappointed the "Winter Soldier" part seemed to be kind of ... short. I felt like we dealt with ALL this other stuff in the storyline and then there was one fight between Cap and WS. I'm excited about the movie, though. I think this story will make a great movie.

A great starting place if you're coming into Cap from the movies. I cannot wait for the adaptation.
