⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (3.5 stars)

Red Rabbit is a strange, atmospheric blend of Western and folk horror. The writing is sparse and sharp, with a bleak tone and flashes of dry humour that I really enjoyed.

“The house would not burn easily, but it would cause her some irritation.”

The setting is vivid. I could feel the dust and dread of the Wild West creeping in.

That said, I found it lacking in character and plot depth. While a few characters grew on me, most felt underdeveloped, and I never felt fully connected to them. The story had a dreamlike, off-kilter quality, which worked well for building unease, but left me a bit confused in the final stretch. I did appreciate that things were tied up by the end, just not always in a way that felt fully earned.

It’s definitely unique, and I’m glad I read it. I’d read more from Alex Grecian, especially for the style and tone, but this one didn’t quite hit all the marks for me.

3.5 ⭐️ I picked up this book because I was given an opportunity to read Rose of Jericho, the sequel by Macmillan Audio. This is a horror book set in old Western times, with a lot of paranormal and witchcraft themes. It sounded way too intriguing to pass up but admittedly the audio for this book did not work for me. I wasn’t a fan of the narrator John Pirhalla, which is a major bummer since I think he narrates the second book. I lucked out and got a Libby digital copy of this book and once I switched it made the experience of this book so much better.

There are A LOT of characters and storylines to keep track of in this adventure western horror and it constantly skips around to different povs and stories. It all comes together in the end but admittedly it was hard for me to keep track of so many characters. The world building in this story is pretty great, I felt like I was on this journey with this motley crew of misfits starting with Rose at the farmhouse of her dead husband and ending in Burden County to find the witch Sadie Grace. I loved how it moved forward and then back in the end and melded all the characters story arcs togethers perfectly. I enjoyed the ending and will be very curious to see how this story extends in the second book. I will say this book isn’t for the faint of heart, it was mild for me but I don’t mind a string of bodies, gore and violence - of which it has plenty (including the cruel death of children and animals). It wasn’t scary, it is horror in the themes of paranormal/supernatural, witchcraft, murder and death. I don’t really want to get into the meat and potatoes of this story, you are welcome to read the synopsis but I enjoyed not knowing much about the story and the wild west ride. Again, if it weren’t for switching to reading, this could have ended up in the DNF pile.

This was my 27th book of 2025.

I really enjoyed this book, but I have to say that it gets a little confusing at points.

Maybe it was because I was listening to the audio book? But the shifting POVs kind of threw me off at some points and I had to go back and listen to a few of the chapters again. I had to make notes on my Kobo along the way. I don’t necessarily mind doing that, I have to do it when there is a large cast of characters because I have ADD— But I felt like with this book it  was particularly important to help me keep up.

I really loved the main troupe, including Rose’s dead husband— he ended up being strangely likable to me? I don’t know if that’s weird. The huntsman, too.
I was really sad when Ned and Benito passed. But to be honest, the shootout was hard for me to follow listening to the audio book, I had to go back and read it. I disliked Old Tom, his death was satisfying to me LOL.

The imagery and tone were very engaging to me. I enjoyed the folky western vibes and the horror imagery. The different creatures they met along the way were scary to me.

Overall I really enjoyed it, but I don’t think it’s for everyone.

So. Good. I had a blast reading this book. I was fully enraptured. The setting, the characters, everything was so delightful. At no point could I predict where the story was headed. Need a tv series of this pronto.
