I enjoyed reading this book especially because it's from a Filipino author and the book is a fast-paced book. I'll probably re-read this again when I'm in a reading slump.

“For a relationship to begin, one person had to be braver than the other.”

This is a story of a fun modern woman and a shy, timid man. Both are heartbroken, sad and lonely although they try very hard to convince themselves and the people around them otherwise. On a chance encounter they find unexpected warmth in each other’s arms, albeit knowing it’s only temporary. They met at a point in their lives when the familiarity of a lover with the coldness of a stranger is just exactly what they needed. Their story takes place over a span of years, in between the quiet of rural San Juan and glitzy New York.

As fluffy and sweet as the book is, it also touches briefly but powerfully on grave topics about various complex relationships such as unrequited love, cheating husbands, long distance love affairs, and even domestic violence. It reminds us that it is okay not to be fine all the time, and acknowledging that there might be something wrong in our current situation is always the first step to healing.

The premise of this book is a simple and often used one which is perfectly fine by me because I love this kind of push and pull, back and forth slow burn romance. But halfway through, I was rather irritated by the lengthy dialogues that seem to go nowhere and feels forced at times. I liked the characters enough I guess but still never felt enough to want to wholeheartedly root for them. Though I did really like it
when they finally put aside their insecurities and got together. I mean if you're a romantic at heart then you're definitely a sucker for such things.

Wouldn't say I would recommend this book but I wouldn't say I hate it too much either, it was a below average read but not entirely bad.

Well that was disappointing. I weirdly feel like this book was too short, which I almost never feel when it comes to romance books but there's a first time for everything. Could not bring myself to really care about Caty or Elan, in fact I thought Caty was perhaps short of a marble. Both of their character arcs ended before I felt like there was any strong resolution, and I know opposites attract sometimes but good lord these two people want VERY DIFFERENT THINGS OUT OF LIFE, the ending was so hamfisted. Oh and of course you simply MUST have a gay best friend that is the voice of reason, guhhh. This book is fine if you want a perfectly vanilla hetero romance or you need to get eased into the romance genre. I will say a good part of my dislike for this book was the narrator for the audiobook, he was not good and added little to no character to any thing.

The chance encounter was what drew me in, but unfortunately execution was lacking. I just never got why Caty and Elan were drawn to one another, and there were several cases where they could have just talked to save the readers some time. While they both had past hangups, their issues were never explored in full detail, so I never got invested in these two. Sadly not for me.

(Though if this took place in light of COVID and social distancing, it might have been more interesting.)

Nothing warms my heart than reading books from Filipino authors, and boy, this book did not (quite) disappoint. It really felt like a fast-paced turn of events and characters that felt underdeveloped, but their dialogues and little scenes worked for me. I was not hooked from the start, but as I went on, the pages just kept coming at me, and I decided it really was a good story. To describe my experience, everything about this story was an "almost." I can't help but say that it left me suspended in a way. All in all, I will definitely check out more of her books and other Filipino authors as well!
