I watched the movie and enjoyed it, even if it is pretty much another big shark action movie. Saying that, I was interested enough to try out this book, and I was surprised how good it was. The characters are still pretty generic and the fight scenes are expected, but I loved the science throughout the book. I'm currently taking a geology course in college, so Alten getting into ocean topography and plate tectonics among other more heavy science topics was really interesting. If you're not interested in those topics, you might find this book pretty boring, but I really enjoyed reading it.

2 stars. The writing was stilted, the characters one dimensional, and the relationships made no sense. The author clearly did some megalodon/shark research, but just dumped it on the page, with zero inclusion into the actual story. The shark behavior went from plausible to there's no freaking way often, sometimes on the same page. I mentally checked out when the megalodon lept 60 feet in the air to attack a helicopter. Literally the only reason I finished it was because it was a beach read.

Surprisingly quick read. Reads just like a monster movie script. Very entertaining. Now I'm excited to watch the movie! POPSUGAR 2018 - book set at Sea.

Extended and revised edition, containing the prequel Meg Origins.

The prequel was an odd mix of National Geographic and embarrassingly bad pulp fiction.

One of the earliest sentences was "… we’d need a bigger boat.“
The author really went there. Was that supposed to to be a quote or is he just oblivious?

And then we have gems like this: „Fueled by the release of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), the luciferase caused the luciferin to oxidize, creating a bioluminescent light.“
Come again? Not a sentence I want to read in an action novella/novel that precedes a blockbuster movie. The scientific info dumps read as if they had been copied straight out of Wikipedia and didn‘t flow well with the narrative.

The novel actually got better or maybe I got used to the style. Still clunky info dumps, but the writing seemed a little better.

The way women were depicted got on my wick though. They were all beautiful blondes or Asian beauties or voluptuous or had breast like swollen grapefruits, were always tanned, etc. The only women not looking like Hollywood stars were prostitutes. Well, thank you for that. Heaven help. By the time I came across this beauty, I just wanted to bash my own head it:
„Neither facts nor logic held any bearing on a woman“.
In what century do we live again?

Anyway, doing my best to ignore the parts that annoyed me, I actually had a pretty good time. The part towards the end where
SpoilerJonas ends up inside of the Meg and wades around in its stomach
was seriously icky and so far out there that I wasn‘t sure if I should scream or laugh my head off.

Predictable plot in terms of who dies, who makes it, who ends up with whom, which was to be expected. Fairly one-dimensional cardboard characters, corny dialogues, the usual sidekick for humorous relief, reasonably well executed action sequences. The right kind of stuff for a lazy day out on the balcony with something cold to drink.

I watched the trailer of the upcoming movie and I think it will be quite different in some parts. I plan to watch, so I can compare...

3 bioluminescent stars, I seriously can‘t give this more than that... I might be swayed to read the next one in this series... in a while... Bring popcorn!

P.S.: For the meticulous people among us: I logged my edition here by ASIN. Different cover on my Kindle, the Amazon page and here. Go figure.

Last summer I saw the movie and absolutely loved it. Didn't realize it was based on a book till I saw it in the library and knew right away that I had to read it.
There are some major differences (which I expected) between book and movie but that's okay in this case!

Loved it!

I got this book (and it's sequel) years ago at a flea market, simply because it had a T-Rex on the cover, I was really into the prehistoric. I read, I liked it, I shelved it.

Now it's 2018 and they did a movie based off of it.
I want to check out to movie but since this one of the few times I actually own the book the movie is based off, I decided to re-read it first.

I remember really liking this book the first time around.

Now? Not as much. The story's still good, and I will admit I like the thought of a giant destructive prehistoric shark like Meg still lurking in our oceans. And I even found myself wondering which camp I would fall on if such a thing were to happen IRL: destroy it or save it.

But i didn't like the descriptions then, still don't like them now. As fun to imagine as it is, the thought of a captive Meg being a success stretches my suspension of disbelief a little too far, if a great white can't be kept in captivity neither can a Megalodon. I'm no doctor but I'm pretty sure you can't actually survive in another animals stomach if they swallow you whole. PETA wouldn't actually care if the Meg lived or died as long as it wasn't put in captivity.

All of that would be forgivable if I at least liked the characters but there's so many of them to keep track off and with the exception of best friend Mac, the main, and Terry and her dad they're all unlikable and annoying. Rooting for the Meg to eat them annoying. Which I guess is a good thing considering most of them do get eaten. But until their deaths they're

description

They: Have an expert in Megaladon.

Also they: Don't listen to him. Mock him. Ignore everything and anything he's tried to teach them. Proceed to endanger people cause they think they can outsmart a giant prehistoric shark. Learn absolutely nothing from their mistakes.

They're annoying. Stupid. Horrible people.

And maybe that's why I didn't like this book as much as I originally had, it's so mean spirited from the beginning. I already know humanity's all of those things, I know people can be horrible I don't need nor do I want to read 400+ pages of it.

I'd been meaning to read this book for years, and with the movie coming out, I figured I'd better hurry up.

Meg was a fun read. I definitely recommend reading it in the summer.

I honestly went in to this book with low expectations and ended up loving the constant action in it. It was a pretty thrilling read. It was far from perfect as many of the most fun reads are, but it was a perfect summer read with some chilling and exciting moments in it. I liked it enough that I would entertain reading the sequels. You have no idea how hard it was to stay away from shark puns in my minimalist review of this book.

I wanna rate this 4 stars but I didn’t understand the end... ?
