I’m not sure how many time an author can use the word trauma and tragedy in a single book. This book felt like somebody learning how to write characters. This is the heroine, she is traumatized by her vanished twin, this is her ex, he is violent, the is the hero, he is traumatized by his dad’s death. Literally all emotions were spelled out. Also, the dialogue was written like those Reddit posts where an alien asks about every day life. I hoped the murder plot would still be good even if the character development lacked but the resolution honestly didn’t quite make sense. So yeah, I wasn’t a fan. I have read worse books but I wouldn’t recommend this to anybody.

Alexandra's fiancé Lyle shows his true abusive self upon coming home from a trip. He's her boss (she's a vet tech, he's a veterinarian). He won't leave her alone and she obviously can't work for him anymore. So, she decides to leave the town she's been living in and stay with her twin cousins who own a bed and breakfast in Alaska. It'll be a new start. She has a feisty Scottie named Spenser that was abused by his former owner. He's missing an eye. He's very protective of Alex and never liked Lyle from the start.
She has an online business selling natural beauty products. So she tries to cover all her tracks. Then she's Alaska bound. Her and nature guy Quinn are attracted to each other right away. She tries to minimally fight it for few days. But, we know how it goes. Then bear claw marks pop up outside Alex's window. Then a woman is murdered. Bearing (no pun intended) the same claw marks that were found outside Alex's window...
Not sure if this is in the "romance" genre. I typically can't be bothered with romance. But, this wasn't melodramatic or cheesy. The dialogue was a little weird at times. But it was readable. It kept me interested. It's modern and timely with Quinn having a Bear Gryll's type reality show. Instead, he teaches people how to track and survive in the Alaskan wilderness. The characters all had some sort of trauma in their past (disappearing twins, stalker exes, a father that was mauled to death by a bear). The villains are one dimensional. Alex is a good character. Smart and thinks fast on her feet. Her cousins, and Quinn are good characters as well. The rest of them are blah. But it's a quick engaging read. 3.25 stars.

She dumps her controlling boyfriend and runs away to Alaska when he turns into a stalker, then falls in love with practically the first attractive man she meets. Also, she's strangely obsessed with/about the twin she absorbed in the womb; like she's her best friend despite never having existed as a a person.

This book was not even a little bit good. Do yourself a favour and skip it. Damsel in distress, leaves bad relationship, falls in love and gets engaged with handsome outdoorsman/knight in shining armour over 10days. Channels her horrible inner Nancy Drew while trying to puzzle out who the murderer is, all the while using the dumbest “personal tragedy” to try and relate to everyone else who actually did endure life traumas. Also does not do any Justice to the title. She is never “deep” in the woods. She’s only goes within a few hours walk from where she is living. And the author didn’t do any justice to the fact she’s in Alaska. Could have put this story in a forest anywhere. Annoyed with myself that I read this.

I found this book to be kind of boring, and the main character to be really annoying. It got a bit better toward the end, but not by much.
