I really didn’t want to like this book. A good friend of mine bangs on about it ALL THE TIME and I wanted to read it and tell him it was cheesy self help tosh.
Within the first few pages I thought “wow, this is pretty gripping”. After a few more pages I though “ah shit, this might actually be a really great book”. By the end I’ve had to admit that this is one of the most compelling, page-turning non-fiction books I’ve ever read.
Props to both Dave Goggins and Adam Skolnick for the amazingly raw way it’s written. Skolnick captures Goggin’s voice so brilliantly and yet clearly knows how to translate it into compelling prose.
There were many things in Goggin’s philosophy that I disagree with and I personally don’t want to aspire to be like him, but many of the lessons from his stories are so inspiring. It’s already shifted my views on many aspects of my life and has changed how I exercise.
Summary:
A tour de force of a book and of a man. Guaranteed to blow you away, and it may just change your life.

Never have I read a book where I highlighted more. This life story is simply amazing. Throughout it, the themes of perseverance, overcoming obstacles, and giving your all are constantly being reinforced. I don't read many books again, but this will be one. Easily in my top 10 books of all time.
Impressive story of overcoming a rough childhood but so degrading to women...I couldn't finish it.
Respectfully, I did not enjoy this book. I gave it two stars…simply because I do appreciate the authors significant service to our country. His childhood experiences were horrific and undoubtedly, shaped him into the man he is today.
There’s a lot to be learned by examining the things he chose not to highlight in the book. Failed marriages, poor relationships with children, etc. The cost of his perceived “greatness” is high and not only in the physical sense that the author takes pride in describing….It’s a miracle he hasn’t died from these extreme physical attempts to prove his worth. I hope one day he can find true contentment, peace and healing.

This is an incredibly insightful book about the power of overcoming physical constraints via mental toughness. While I don’t think everyone should push their bodies in the way David Goggins has, there’s a ton of value and power in his “mind over body” mentality. I know that I personally rarely hit anywhere near my full capacity in terms of pushing and achieving myself. In fact, I identified strongly with the “over achiever” aspect of his story because it validated that it’s okay to be an “over” achiever (which I contend is simply achieving in my own world). There are so many aspects of myself that I see in David’s story, and I’d recommend this to anyone looking to improve themselves. The audiobook is fantastic as he and his ghost writer provide commentary between segments. It was very entertaining and engaging.

There’s something about the tough love that Goggins dishes out that really spoke to me! His real-world examples of what he personally went through are a bit extreme but demonstrate his point that the only thing holding you back is you and your mentality. Get ready for an intense read but by the end of it, you’ll have some tools to help push through your own barriers to go towards goals you thought were unattainable.
