The book is well written and it shows all the useless and hypocritical rules that society expects from people to follow, but I have to say it was hard to read.

It's not the author's fault, because I get all the context she tried to explain, it's just that I really disliked Newland Archer. The man is the definition of hypocrisy and of course, like a man with infinite self esteem, puts the blame of his choices on everything but himself and his cowardice. He makes a choice to marry a woman knowing he loves another woman, so he chose to ruin their lives and spend all his life weeping. This guy was a huge waste of May and Elen time.

This is a classic I never expected to love. I’m not a fan of stories revolving around affairs but this was an exemption. The love affair is the substance to determine societal expectations and how an individual responds to it, just like Newland Archer. This novel is a book of courage, expectations, regret, and yearning. The language used is also comprehensible. I heavily despise Newland Archer. May Welland is the purest soul; she didn’t deserve infidelity from Newland at all. Ellen Olenska was just mid. I like her uniqueness in Old New York society, but I dislike how she handled her relationship with Newland Archer and her cousin May.
