A witty regency romance full of lovers squabble.
Violet and James have been married for five years. The last four years has been distant while living in the same house, due to The Argument. The marriage now, however, is advancing into a game or duel of sorts, to try to receive attention from the other party.
This is a lighthearted and funny story, with characters and actions easy to relate to.

“If I must dance with you twice before any discussion of your undergarments can ensue,”
he added, “I had better not waste any time -
it’s a conversation I suddenly find myself quite desperate to have.”

Listen... perhaps as someone who loathes any sort of deception in romance, I should have known better than to read a book that literally has "hoax" in the title. Surprise surprise, I took issue with the whole "faking consumption" plotline (I think if James had believed it for any longer, it would have been intolerable and cruel, but since he found out quickly and it became something of a game between them I became more okay with it). And I found Violet in general immature, petty, short-tempered and obnoxious. But I did enjoy the tone and style, I liked James, and I appreciated that their friends were constantly saying what I as a reader was thinking and trying to talk some sense into them.
