I read this as a bit of what I hoped would be amusing research into what moving back to the states would be like after living in England. What I didn't realize (because it isn't explained until the last chapter) is that Bill Bryson never WANTED to move back. It is a very amusing read none-the-less just possibly a bit harsh on America.
funny informative lighthearted reflective medium-paced

Laugh out loud hilarious. One of the best books I've ever read. It's a collection of columns he wrote while living in Hanover, NH.

It was entertaining but note it is a collection of Columns he wrote that have been compiled into this book. Great if you need something that you can read for a bit and then put down again.

Not my favorite (sorry Max!). Once again, I’m not a fan of short stories. While some of Bill’s tales are funny, a lot felt a little over the top (& a bit outdated) for me. But a nice message - though there are a lot of wacky things about the U.S., there are also many things to miss about home :)

The haters are hating, and perhaps this book wasn't particularly well organized or centered, and a few of the entries didn't do much for me, but it gets five stars for the sheer number of times it made me laugh out loud.

I didn't finish it before I had to return it to the library...

It's Bill Bryson. What's not to love?

The book is a compilation of columns he wrote in the late 1990s, which also gives them (in 2013) a delightful nostalgia.

Bill Bryson always makes me smile. And laugh. He has a wonderful way of looking at completely normal, everyday occurrences and making them hilarious. I love dry, self-deprecating humor, which is what he’s great at. This was an interesting compilation of random thoughts on living in America. Some of the chapters didn’t quite hit for me, but most of them seemed really spot on. Also, the graduation speech at the end of the book…so good! I wish he had spoken at my high school graduation.

Bill is such an easy read, great book for a road trip, light, funny and nice short stories made it easy to pick up and resume.
