I like the premise of the story (the clairaudience part) and the broad story itself
Spoiler (but I hated the "alien thing". You can definitely do an interesting clairvoyance story without bringing in inter-dimensional beings.)
, although it was predictable about a third of the way in.
Spoiler That sex scene was unnecessary. It took the flow and ground it to a screeching halt. I understand why something like this occurred to advance the plot, but I feel like the same could have been accomplished another way. Like, seriously, find your killer who is hunting the both of you down before you have sexy time. Additionally, the description of his penis was totally unwarranted. A lot of the text in this scene left me saying WTF and even laughing at times. I really don't think that was the intention of the author.

Also, if Ian was whatever Black is and since Black has a different looking penis, why didn't Ian or why didn't Miri notice?

The writing style feels off to me. I think it is too many complex sentences (dependent, independent clause). Too many "meaning"s. I don't feel that the dialogue is true to how people actually talk. It felt fake. Too many pauses and not enough answers. It left me feeling frustrated with the author.

The reason I'm giving this book a 4 instead of a 5 was that it took me a bit to get into the author's writing style, but once that happened I was hooked.

I loved the concept of the book, of a paranormal thriller (is that what they call a detective story involving people from other dimensions living on this dimension?). I thought the idea was refreshing and very gripping.

Spoiler I liked the story for the most part- but that almost sex scene was weird and disorienting. I kept getting the feeling like he was trying to talk her into more than just sex (a strange 'mate' situation going on here maybe? W/o telling her thats what it was) And why would it hurt...she obviously doesn't know whats going on and to just jump into that with no explanation on why he penis is strange and different is jarring. Also the fact that she felt his need to be with one of his own kind...and maybe the fact that it was less about being with her than just being with someone like him.. I didn't like that. Also the prostitute comment right after he tried to sleep w/ her was yuck.

I am honestly not sure how to review this book. It definitely had some intriguing aspects and the story was suspenseful and exciting. But it was also a bit "out there" in terms of parts of the plot and had me shaking my head. I settled on three stars because I did enjoy it overall.

I was hot and cold about Miri. At times she came across and smart, strong and capable. At other points she was needy and insecure, and while her back story partly explains that (and I won't give more details to avoid spoilers) it made her less sympathetic for me because I gravitate to strong female characters. Still she had her moments.

Black was more interesting to me. He starts out as 100% in control of everything and everyone around him - including the cops - but when he meets Miri his veneer cracks which made him a bit more human for me. I like Black.

I can't really say much about the actual plot without giving spoilers, but let's just say that this story line isn't my particular favourite flavor of paranormal/sci-fi. Again, it had its moments, but there were also parts that had me shaking my head.

The "romance" aspect of this book was just weird and didn't work for me at all. When a sex scene in a book makes you wince it's off the rails.

Finally, the description of this book says "no cliff-hanger" bit in fact it DOES end with the reader left hanging if you ask me and that always irks me.

If I hadn't already bought the second book in a deal for my reader I doubt I would read the next book. But since I already have I probably will to see if I like this world more in the next chapter or if I am done for good here.

***3.5 Stars***

I have nothing against shirtless men on covers, but I think this cover is absolutely beautiful and engaging! I was also intrigued by the premise and was in the mood for more grit and heat than the cozy paranormal mysteries I’ve read recently. I developed high expectations for this novel and it did deliver…in part.

First, the good – I liked Miriam (female MC), but my interest stayed fixated on the mysterious Quentin (male MC). The world building was explained slowly with a lot left for future books which works for me. The plot/ premise did deliver with some intensity and fun.

Next, the not so good – with the man on the cover and the subtitle, I expected to get Quentin’s POV. You don’t. Also, as it’s in first person, there’s more internal (even discarding special abilities) than dialogue and action. I’m an impatient reading and found myself skimming in between dialogue points.

Still though, there was enough fun in both premise, characters, and romantic subplot for me to continue this series. However, I do hope future books contain Quentin’s POV!!

I enjoyed the first half of the book a lot more than the last half. I just kind of lost interest in the story. I doubt I will continue on in the series, even though I am intrigued and have questions about some things left open in the first book.

Well, no. I got 28% in riding some intermittent interest in the plot, but the immature writing style just sucks the life out of any action. The author's publisher completely dropped the editing ball.

This free novel taught me not to bother reading Andrijeski's other work. Don't believe the five star reviews. There are elements of potential here, but the reader has to work to pull them together since neither writer nor editor managed to. Some readers won't mind that. But you have to be terribly un-critical to give this five genuinely-felt stars.
