Seol, a young damo (female inspector) finds herself entangled in a murder mystery that's getting far too personal for her taste.

I could not put this down, even when the twist became somewhat predictable.

I loved The Red Palace by June Hur and I was excited to read more by her. I ended up really struggling with this book. I tried to start it like three times and finally in November got serious. I made it about halfway, got distracted by something else and didn't pick it up again for a couple of weeks.

I am 99% sure that this is a me thing. I had a hard time with Seol and connecting with her. I liked Inspector Han and I was super curious about Seol's past. The mystery was interesting I was just not connected to Soel.

i really liked this book, but for the first half, it didnt feel like a lot was happening? the beginning was especially slow for me, and i think this is mainly because historical fiction typically isn’t my thing. i loved seol so much though!! and the ending was a really enjoyable (yet bittersweet) read :’)

This was so disappointing it hurts.

A spectacular premise and great thematic material utterly wasted by bad, bad writing. Clunky prose, awkward pacing of scenes, stilted and unrealistic dialogue... It was a real slog, but I made it through to completion solely for the premise, hoping for a redeemable finish, but alas.

Not worth it.
