I really enjoyed this! I don't normally read historical fiction, but I know I like June's work, so of course, I had to read. It was extra fun doing the read along on Instagram, where June shared her thoughts as she reread this book.

I loved our main character, Seol. She was such an interesting character, and I loved getting to know more about the role of Damos. Her journey throughout the story was so intriguing, and I felt her frustrations about not being taken seriously just because she's female deep in my soul.

This is a great debut novel, and I'm so glad June decided to share this with the world.

I did enjoy this book. However, despite the 300 pages, it feels as if.. not a whole lot happened? Perhaps it’s because I read one of June Hur’s latest works before this, and this was her debut, but yeah it felt lacking. I think Hur’s got a thing for female characters with familial problems, because both this books female lead Seol and the lead of the other book I read do not have a good relationship with their older sisters. And also apparently some sort of family-committed-treason background. Feels like its just a recycled character draft.

A young woman working as a servant for the police force in Joseon (Korea) starts independently investigating the death of a young noble woman.  I love a good historical mystery and this was beautifully written.

I had two problems with this book.

1. The main character is Watson, but without Holmes (or Hasting without Poirot) in her investigative competence. Nonetheless she solves the mystery.

2. A considerable amount of this book is about Christian history in Korea. That in and of itself isn't a problem, but it is a problem because it's not in the blurb and thus is snuck upon the reader. It's also a problem because the way the persecution is depicted is oversimplified. Now, I don't know much Korean history, but I know that to be the case because there's a brief historical note at the end that makes clear one way that is a much more complicated subject.
