I didn't give it a full 5 stars, but it was a near thing! This book is definitely one that I can foresee being a book club title. There is just so much there to unpack, and it absolutely transports you. Every chapter deserves an opportunity for discussion. I think that would also help you get the most out of this story, because you truly lose something by not taking your time. I didn't love how I found myself struggling to remember certain characters and their place in the narrative. I should have taken more time with each chapter to really absorb and reflect. That's another point in this book's favor, though-- I tore through it because I was so eager to find out what happens next. But there were some crucial figures there that I thought could have used more fleshing out, especially when you're dealing with a whodunnit.
The ending also left me feeling a little robbed of closure. I think one of the strongest aspects of YA-- what really makes it YA-- is hope. What was it all for? Despite the fact that Seol gains in the end, I personally felt that her losses were too great. I can't say I regret getting invested, though. I didn't feel betrayed. Just-- bereft.
Overall, though, I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction, detective fiction, or mysteries, or anyone interested in Korean history/culture.
The mystery didn't grip me really, but I really loved Seol. I didn't really care too much what the clues added up to and was more invested in just following Seol.
Great book overall and I'd definitely pick up something by June Hur in the future.
