3 1/2 is more accurate rating. I’m not a true crime type of gal, but I really enjoy how it read. The biggest theme was the metaverse idea. The idea that with every action we take there are hundreds or thousands of lives we could have lived. I think about this all the time actually. I wish it would have focused somehow more on that. I enjoyed the concept of the theme more than the story itself.
This is where spoilers come in so STOP reading if not started or finished the book. The author did a good job not glorifying the crimes. It was never graphic and l appreciated the ending where there was more of a focus on the victims and the “what could have been”. Again, I wish that could have been more apart of the book throughout the story. It would have given the reader more sympathy and connection to The Girls. To be honest, at times I felt more sympathy for Ansel, which I think is intentional and intentionally uncomfortable- causing us readers to relate with Blue.
Another big theme was morality and responsibility to that morality. I often asked myself if there were more people who were responsible for the outcome? Ansels dad? Mother? Saffy? I caught myself thinking how morality shapes our decisions but also, how other peoples decisions can shape our morality. Are we all born with the same amount of morality? Surly baby Ansel was not born with less. Or was he? Was there something he was always missing and no matter the choice he would always end back where he did. There is a duality in people. But what does that mean when the bad turns into horrific action? Is there room for sympathy?
Overall would recommend.

Sadly I wasn’t keen on this book. I just couldn’t really get it to it of the characters and found it quite difficult to follow. I wasn’t captivated. So good parts about the main character Ansel though and his last hours
