this was an amazing book. I loved the plot and all the characters but I didn't give it five stars because one of them dies. :')

This was a very middle of the road book. The magic system seemed interesting but it relied heavily on “everyone knows how it works in this world so only minimal explanation is given”. The writing is ok, the characters are really interesting. But then the author talks about how they wanted to explore the Paris world fair and colonialism, and they….don’t. It’s just a backdrop for the plot. It’s mentioned slightly, but it’s not the main point of the book.

Team heist/romp in fantastical world. A bit of Indiana Jones puzzle thrown in. Felt a little rushed, chaotic, deus ex for me, but certainly fun.

This is one of the best books I have read in print and the audiobook was so disappointing. I hate that the actors were directed to use accents with all the characters, some of which did not match the character’s origin. Also, one of the narrators sounded like a screen reader. An exquisitely written book, but I do not recommend the audio.
