could not get past chapter 5, total boredom. There is no story it's more like a bunch of random essays

I have no idea why it took me so long to get to this book or to finish this book but it is one of my favorite books of all time and now I am can officially say that I am a Joe Hill fan
adventurous dark fast-paced

This book sounded really cool, and for the first 200 pages it was. Then I remembered that I hate science fiction, and that most dystopian plots only work for me for so long. The idea of the "Dragonscale" spore infecting the population grabbed me; I've always been interested in infectious disease and Doomsday scenarios.

I didn't love any of the characters, particularly since many of them had pretty vulgar language (and that automatically distances me from them). And I didn't like the author's obvious axe to burn with religion and spirituality.

I kept going through all 750 pages, hoping that the ending would redeem the dragging middle section, but it really didn't. I could have done without the whole book.

Barely 3 stars.

A bit long, but not sure where I'd cut it. This was nearly impossible to put down. I read it in two days, roughly.

Some pretty cool apocalyptic fiction. I think this was recently made into a TV movie or something, so maybe I'll check it out. Joe Hill's books are usually pretty worthwhile.

It took me longer to slog through this book than I might have guessed it would at the outset. Interesting premise, but I think I've maybe grown a bit weary of the post-apocalyptic novel, and this one wasn't as well-written as The Stand or Station Eleven, to name a few, making some of the "protagonist is in big trouble, seems to find relief, but actually lands in even bigger trouble" pattern of the novel grow a bit tedious.
adventurous challenging dark emotional tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Such an interesting concept, and very well executed. It was a little slow paced in the beginning, but I never lost interest and it totally picked up later on.

It's not bad, I suppose. The premise is interesting and it has nice, dramatic moments (including a great end). But those positive aspects don't justify its ridiculous length. And there's just too much dead space that could be easily edited without the book losing its edge. If you're on the fence, I'd give this a hard pass unless you have a lot of time to kill.
