It is indeed fascinating how we have no idea of the importance of breathing through the nose. This is a good practical book to teach you that. Would be 5/5 if there were more science, in depth overviews of different ancient cultures’ breathing techniques which book mentions quite a lot.

Probably closer to 3.5. The ending felt abrupt but I was fascinated with the information and have implemented some of the breathing techniques into my daily life. I’ve noticed a difference in the small ways I’ve practiced already. This book is just another example of how I am continuously reminded that Western civilization does not care about human health and longevity.

I didn't finish this book because it fits the theme of other self-help-guru pseudoscience books. It is not that the studies referenced are pseudoscience; those are pretty OK examples of stories worth exploring more. But the book is written as if anecdotes without facts are meant to be rigorously proven conclusions, that the works of the ancients are wisdom beyond the knowledge of the present, that single superheroes have secret insight that us mere mortals need to agree with. In other words, this book is optimism without rigor. As a result, even if there are nuggets such as nose breathing increasing oxygen intake, the book itself is unreliable pseudoscience. I stopped at page 85 of 337. Don't waste your time with this book.

Some interesting anecdotes but a book about “The new SCIENCE of a lost art” should probably have more actual science. Instead, it’s largely about the author’s own experience trying a bunch of things that may have worked thousands of years ago but for some reason they’ve since been largely forgotten.

Audio. Super interesting look at how we breathe and how we can breathe better. Lots of science but clearly stated so you can understand it. Also breath work exercises at the end.
