Self serving. Trying very hard to be Kitchen Confidential but lacks the talent and heart of Anthony Bourdain.

This is a very interesting read to see how the restaurant world works and evolved. It does show how far things have come, but also how far things still have to go. It does a lovely job of timestamping itself to major events without letting those become prime focuses.

I had hoped for more. At times this seemed like little than a compilation of tales of sex, drugs, and alcohol in the context of the restaurant industry, which doesn’t come out looking that great. In the post-Covid chat room where people thrash out exactly what the issues are with restaurants (tipping policy, lack of staff, arrogant guests etc) this is a fairly entertaining contribution to the conversation but I’m it sure it tells us anything new or different.

Repetitive, very shallow, and unnecessarily vulgar without adding meaning to the stories. On a positive, I do think the book does a good job of recognizing the stress level of hospitality work.

I never give a one star review because I try never to continue with a book that I don't like. I hung in there because I thought maybe there would be some kind or arc. Like maybe the author wouldn't be such a misogynist in the end, or maybe the author would mature in some way and be reflective. Never happened and I am sorry I wasted any time on this book at all.

A memoir that tells the tales of the authors career in some of the best New York City restaurants. What goes on in a restaurant? What's happening in the kitchen or after hours? This story aims to answer these questions. This book was well written and very informative. I didn't really think I was the right audience for it. It wasn't my cup of tea.
