the best book that explains why war really is needed in order to maintain peace
This book was a bit different than the rest of the series. Not as different as the book before it, but different none the less. It's a nice change. There have been many horrifying elements. I was afraid that it would just keep throwing the terror out there.
I enjoy the amount of philosophy in Goodkind's work. Thinking about how races could come to think about things completely differently. The sword of truth books are so much better than the TV series. My favorite quote would be explaining the wizards 8th rule: "Be justified in your convictions. Be completely committed. Earn what you want and need rather than waiting for others to give you what you desire."
Which in essence is "Deserve Victory".
This was the first sword of truth book where I skimmed a few parts as the amount of recap was getting a bit much.

Terry Goodkind should stick to fantasy. He gets his philosophy in my fantasy stories, and then beats the dead horse with it. Again. And again.
A good subtitle for this book would be "Richard is Always Right". He likes to soliloquize. For pages at a time. It was incredibly dry, and worse than the incessant back story telling. Richard talks to everyone, even Kahlan and Cara and Jennsen, like they are completely incapable of grasping the most simple of concepts. I didn't think there could be a book worse that Faith of the Fallen. I was staggeringly wrong.

5/10
Well, hooray for no sexual sadism but boo-hiss for all the haranguing about the supremacy of reason, the value of life and free will, and the importance of the individual.
When Goodkind concentrated on telling the story, really telling the story, this book was interesting and enjoyable. Most of the familiar characters were back and much of the action was well-paced and moved the plot forward. The lectures by Richard (and others, unfortunately) disrupted that pace but, overall, this book hung together pretty well.
The big climax was a bit of a letdown.
