5 for those that like astrology, 0 for those that don’t.

I can't believe this book sat on my bookshelf FOR YEARS and was actually my husband's before I "found" it this past weekend and devoured it. It really IS the only astrology book you'll ever need. I found a site through astrology.about.com and did my birth chart and with the help of this book was able to learn a lot about my personality. I even got a lot of my friends on twitter to do theirs. What I enjoyed the most was the descriptions of all the signs (Rising, Sun, Moon) and how they should be read and then each of the planets and their significance. I jumped around in this book because it's more of a reference manual, but I read all the major section except for the Houses of the zodiac which is next on my list.

If anything, this book is a ton of fun and absolutely fascinating. If you enjoy astrology, I highly recommend it! Pick it up, keep it on your shelf, and use it to examine all of your family and friends. I bet it's right in 90% of circumstances :)

Love this book! So informative! Starts off with giving you basic knowledge and continues to build on! I’m so glad I found an astrology book to help me understand the more complex parts of astrology and that explains so many different aspects of it! I will always refer back to this book when having astrological questions! Highly recommend if you’re wanting to better understand yourself and those around you!

When I started studying astrology, this was the first book I read. Very comprehensive but simply written and great for beginners who are just figuring out what sign their moon is in. The charts in the book are not always going to be the best indicator for planetary placements, so it's best to go to a site such as astro.com or astrology.com to get your natal chart. Then you can use the book to help you figure what all those planets mean.

There are a lot of fascinating aspects to astrology and understanding one’s birth chart. The book started off well, and I liked the original message the author wrote in the introduction about how astrology and birth charts are complex, and one has to take in the whole in order to get a clearer understanding. I also liked the message that astrology is not meant to predict the future nor the fate of a person. Much like tarot, astrology and understanding birth charts is meant to provide insight or useful nuggets to help guide people along their path.

But then getting into the book, I found there to be a lot of contradictions to the authors previous statement in the introduction. Rather than gentle insights, the book seemed more rigid with very specific details that seemed both fixed and defining. What started off as interesting quickly grew tiresome and I got the sense that there were also some heavy biases towards certain astrological signs.

I learnt a few interesting things along the way, the broader concepts fascinating to consider and understand. The more detailed aspects however, is where the author seemed to lose their way, becoming way too specific in how a person is defined as per their birth chart, rather than to offer pause, understanding and reflection.

It simply was not for me.

Very broad book that covers a lot of things many similar books don’t. Has a brief explanation for every major placement and aspect, history and lore of the zodiac, and a glossary to quickly research specific terms or topics. It’s a great reference book. The only thing that would have improved this book is if it had more lists and summaries. At times, the text just bled together and it would have been nice if some of the info was presented in a more concise way. I also didn’t particularly enjoy reading this book. It wasn’t very engaging and felt a little robotic at times.
