I read this for school related purposes.
It was boring for the first half or so, then it got a little more interesting later. There was too much violence towards fish for me. The philosophical aspects were interesting I guess. I don't know why the old man thought talking to his injured hand would help anything.
I'm not going to write an actual proper review because I don't have enough strong feelings about it to do so.

On the coast of Cuba, two friends: an old man and a young boy struggle against lives they cannot completely control: the boy's parents want him to stop going out on the man's fishing boat, and the old man has gone without catching fish for a string of hopeless days. The story is about going past those obstacles -- not in defiance, but out of faith and love, to be the best at what each of them was put on Earth to be. It is an inspiring and suspenseful story. It reads like a parable, and reminds me a lot of Steinbeck's THE PEARL in style, content and purpose. The man thinks to himself: "...I have no luck anymore. But who knows? Maybe today. Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready."
Wow, this was pretty depressing. There is a lot of symbolism here, if you care to look for it. That alone could bump the book to a higher rating for me, but three stars means I liked it, and that's pretty appropriate for this one.
hemingway has always blown my mind away because of the sheer simplicity with which he writes. his precision, his short-lived sentences, his too-real characters. This novel is one of them. it makes you turn your pages faster than you thought you would when you're reading a story about an old man and a humongous fish. it's also a quick read, and will leave you wanting more. and of course, you will want more.
Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea is a well-executed novella about an aging man's battles with himself and the elements. While I can appreciate the novella's place in literature, its subject, characters, and messaging did not evoke strong reactions from me like other classical literature has. I'd like to read this short piece in another few years and see how my reactions have changed.
