I think the author could have done so much more with these characters. As written, I didn't find it a compelling story at all, although it did make me very curious about what the real story was! I was very disappointed with the invented elements, when the true-life people had such interesting stories that could have been explored.

beautiful just beautiful
I might have cried

This was a very interesting book. I enjoyed the journey of the transformation from Einar to Lili. Although by the end I was sad that it almost felt like Greta was left again trying to keep her life together.

Ecco, secondo me, non c'è riuscito. Ci sono momenti molto toccanti tra loro, per carità, ma non credo abbia colto la loro vera essenza, il primum movens. Non mi è proprio parso.

Couldn't finish it. The subject matter is fascinating but it's told in such a dry, boring way. The characters are flat and I found I didn't much care what happened to them. How is it possible to take such interesting people and events and make them dull as dishwater?

Iffy. I see the love Greta had for Einar/Lili. I don't feel much of it is reciprocated. The novel feels disjointed somehow. Einar/Lili is so overwhelmed by being in the wrong body that she doesn't appear able to form strong emotional relationships. Also somewhat puzzled at how the transgender identify is presented as a multiple personality behavior. I understand that the Lili the novel is based on did identify that way but it does make room for confusion. Transgender of which im aware I know little of still shouldn't be confused with a multiple personality disorder. I didn't care much for the characters either I am sad to say: Greta is so obviously ignoring herself and her needs, yet sometimes using Lili for painting; Lili's life challenge came out as self absorbed. The writing was very nicely done.

A wonderful book. The story of Lili's transition is moving and heartbreaking for both her and her wife. This was also a story of a loving and supportive relationship between two people. That's something most of us can appreciate. My intention is to now read anything David Ebershoff has written.
