I personally didn’t enjoy this book - probably because I’m not a 7 year old boy. The humour is juvenile, it’s about a pair of boys doing silly things and encountering all sorts of ludicrous scenarios. No morals, values, lessons woven into it. But if you have a reluctant reader at home, this might do the trick. One star for me, 4 stars for 7 year old boys most likely.

It’s was a good book

I picked this up for my almost 5 yr old to see what all the hype was about. He loved the anarchic nature of the story, the ridiculous inventions and situations and the outlandish nature of it all. I have to say it did a little less for me but I still found it entertaining, particularly appreciating the meta nature of the tale along with the brazenly cheeky use of repeated images and pages to fill the space. They know the value of holding a visual joke for a loooong time, something that books don't usually get away with.

Perhaps some of the violence and language is a little much for an almost 5 yr old but I think the expected age is probably a year or two ahead. It's certainly less staid than the Faraway Tree.

We've already started the next one.

The kind of book that's written to "get boys reading".

The size of the book is deceptive, there is very little writing on the page, and an adult reader could finish it in an hour.

It is an action novel, with several barely-connected scenes, and a basic underlying plot. Fantastic to read quickly, and a great stepping stone to later reading.

A funny, silly book with lots of pictures. Give to those who love Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

- summary from the book:
Who wouldn't want to live in a treehouse? Especially a 13-story treehouse that has a bowling alley, a see-through swimming pool, a tank full of sharks, a library full of comics, a secret underground laboratory, a games room, self-making beds, vines you can swing on, a vegetable vaporiser and a marshmallow machine that follows you around and automatically shoots your favourite flavoured marshmallows into your mouth whenever it discerns you're hungry. Life would be perfect for Andy and Terry if it wasn't for the fact that they have to write their next book, which is almost impossible because there are just so many distractions, including thirteen flying cats, giant bananas, mermaids, a sea monsters pretending to be mermaids, enormous gorillas, and dangerous burp gas-bubblegum bubbles!

Enjoy!

Advice for those wanting to read this book,if characters who can't focus or finish their task until the last second annoy you this book may not be for you. I understand how it may appeal to a certain audience, and I predict that the tween book club I supervise will mostly have liked it, but I must say the book was not for me. I was annoyed by Terry's character. His creativeness wasn't written in an endearing way or even his lack of focus. However since I see where it can appeal to some, mostly reluctant readers or comic/humor fans I'll give it 3 stars.
