an easy 5 stars for the relationship and story that should have been. and the many cute scenes we got
2 stars for the actual book

My least favorite out of MXTX's books, but I don't hate it.
Please don't sue me or kill me or burn my family home.

I just feel like TGCF and SVSSS have a charm which MDZS doesn't have. SVSSS is hilarious, I love the main characters more than my life, and it feeds my every whim. TGCF is extremely well written, and makes me actually think, which the other two stories do too, but not in the way they were made to be thought about. SVSSS makes me think about bl fetishization and how much I want a Lou Binghe POV. MDZS... Doesn't make me think much. It's a fun read, then it's over, and I moved on to better things (like SVSSS I love SVSSS pls go read SVSSS).
MDZS, like every good middle child, is kind of looked over in my mind - but in no way does that make the story unbearable, or even not to my tastes. (Although the extras are definitely not to my tastes because what the fuck was that-)

... Yeah.
I would write about the plot but it's so long and so much shit happens I feel like people should just experience it themselves.
And, uh. Maybe don't read the extras.

After watching and enjoying the tv adaptation, I was really excited to read the novel, because a lot of budget constraints and odd plot details seemed a bit off, so I expected the novel to give more contect and meaning to the show, while wanting to enjoy the story in its original shape.
And indeed, almost all things I found odd in the series made more sense, the writing was pleasant and I do believe that the character writing, especially for side characters is really good. A few things I found strange in the writing style, but due to it being a translation I want to disregard that, as I cannot judge if these issues were present when read in the original language.
My main fault with the book, which is a pleasant and enjoyable read, is that the additional chapters after the story itself ends were rather off-putting. Apart from more than half being basically smut fanfiction written by the author herself, only very few of the chapters really gave the fanservice and pleasant addition that I believe was intended. While I know the feeling of being left hanging after spending so much time with such an extensive story and was delighted to see how some of the characters would fare after the novel's conclusion, the additional chapters (for me personally) did not only fail to provide interesting continuations for the individual characters but managed to diminish my excitement for additional content and also somewhat tainted the positive impression I had of the main novel.

Why walk the broad, sunny road, crowded with people? I'd rather walk the single-plank bridge into the night....

Wei Wuxian is a bright young cultivator who only wants to defend justice with a clear conscious. Yet, he somehow ends up twisted in a cruel fate and becomes the enemy of the cultivating world. Only one person, Lan Wangji, is bold enough to stand with him. They make quite the odd pair; the Yiling Patriarch, walking a demonic path, and the heavenly Hanguang-Jun, known for his righteousness. Thus begins a tale of resurrection, demonism, found family, familial and romantic love, politics, gossip, and redemption.

Also, lots of trauma, and pining between male characters.

There's not much to be said about this novel which hasn't already been said. Obviously, it's a gay romance. But this relationship is premised on an even more basic theme in the novel: how and when to stand up for what is right, and to stand up to what is wrong. MDZS takes place in a world where righteousness is performed but rarely actually upheld. Those seeking redemption rather turn out to be villains; those who sacrifice everything selflessly become the ones who are vilified. Not to be ignored either are the gossipers and the cowards--maybe not cowards in battle, but in their hearts, those who would rather reach blindly for glory than actually contemplate right and wrong. In the end, this gossip, the need for a figurehead to fall, the need to proclaim oneself as morally right while doing nothing, almost is painted as the true villain.

The world the author has created is painstakingly complex and every character's motivations and actions have been deeply considered. Although many characters end up with a miserable fate--something you are told from the very beginning, so this is not a spoiler--when you get to the end and pull on those threads, you realize everything unravels, no matter how small or insignificant the event seems. Every single thread has a purpose, a clear catalyst and consequence. So while it is hard to process what the characters went through, at the same time, it's hard to imagine that anything else could have happened.

It's not a perfectly written story...there are many times the author tells you something after the fact to explain a character's motivations, rather than simply showing you, and probably half of the novel is in form of flashback, in one way or another. Having already watched the drama before reading the novel, I was already used to this and appreciated having a deeper view into characters' minds. However, it can get tedious or offputting at parts. Nevertheless, I rated the story 5 stars because I expect it to stay with me a long time.

The book was great I have friends who've also read it so its nice to talk to them about it

Incredibly heart-wrenching, touching, and overall life-changing. This serves as a good entry point to exploring the Chinese fiction scene as well, especially Chinese fantasy. Canonically gay with a happy ending, although it's well-earned and the main characters and whole cast suffer a great deal to get there.
