I used to be such a huge nerd for this book. I remember 13-year-old-me yapping about it nonstop, I practically spoiled the entire plot to my friends. It’s been a while since I’ve read it, my review is based on how I felt about it back then. I’ll keep it short:
  • engaging and intricate characters with huge developments
  • well-written complex relationships (I’m still crying about Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng)
  • complicated yet powerful plot
  • tear-jerking characters arcs (xiao xingchen my shaylaaaa)
  • slow burn romance

this book has so many plots and arcs, they’re all so complicated and interconnected. There’s so many aspects to consider that it actually makes it difficult for me to develop a single coherent review. It’s better if you read it yourself.

The reason why I gave it a 4 star is that there are some parts I personally found boring, some parts were quite slow to develop. However, it didn’t diminish my love for this book.

I have personal touches to add when you actually do consider reading the novel:
  • fandom makes the best fan songs (absolutely recommend, I have a whole list of songs that I can go on a rant about)
  • this novel has a donghua (anime), manhua, drama series, audio drama, a rumoured video game, and a dedicated fanbase that composes songs and animations. USE IT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.
  • Jin Ling is a baby.

Do you guys want slowburn? Characters with a grey morality? Miscommunication? Happy ending? Then this story is the one for you!
The world building is seriously amazing, and the story is as interesting as it can get. Don't let the time skip and the loads of names to refer to each and every character scare you-- the former are well written and clear, and the latter will become easier to recognize as you go on reading

kinda the best love story OAT if you think about it

only 4 stars cuz the romance got a bit fetish-y at times and i think that the romanticization of that scene where lwj forcefully kissed a blindfolded wwx was weird.... other than that the plot is good and i love the characters (though i could be biased from watching cql)

“Tens of thousands of words were left unspoken, in exchange for endless laughter and hugs.”

You know that feeling when you've read something so great, that nothing else will ever compare to that experience? That's exactly how I'm feeling right now. To me, this book was everything. It's not perfect, but somehow that just makes me love it even more.

The story was immediately engaging and immersive, dropping you right into the thick of it. You slowly have to learn the ins and outs of this world of cultivation, and how all of these different characters fit into it. I feel that these were some of the most realistic characters that I've seen in awhile. No one felt like some cheap two dimensional piece of paper. Even the villains had moments where I wept for them, and that's not an easy thing to accomplish. I especially adored our two main leads, who were never quite what they seemed. The romance was the best part though, it was filled with sorrow and beauty, and it will always be my favorite.

MDZS is in part about how you can’t stay neutral in the face oppression.

Wei Wuxian is not perfectly good at all (neither is Lan Wangj though they‘re mostly seen as opposites on the spectrum). he kills, endangers and hurts the people around him and is often over confident in himself. He also deeply cares about people and he won’t accept things just because they’re the status quo.
Anyways his character is one the reasons this is so enjoyable to me.

I wish we had as many fleshed out
and alive
female characters as male but still luv Wen Qing and Mianmian and even Yanli.

Quotes:

“Young man, there are two cringe-worthy phrases in one’s life that must be said, no matter what.”

“Which two?”

“‘Thank you’, and 'I’m sorry’.”

“What can anybody do to me if I don’t say them?”

“Someday, you’ll say those words in tears.””

“But what he hadn’t expected was that when everyone feared him and flattered him, Lan WangJi scolded him right in his face; when everyone spurned him and loathed him, Lan WangJi stood by his side.“

“Between you and me, there is no need for 'thank you' and 'sorry'."

side note:
i’m not a purist but mxtx really does not write good sex scenes and they need their own cws, but they’re easily skippable especially since they’re only in the end. and people who praise censorship have lost the plot.
