Cutesy and predictable. I had a hard time believing that the narrator didn't know so many secrets about her mother, and her relationship with the still-married boyfriend seemed doomed from the beginning. A lot of the characters seemed pretty formulaic (like Shawn, the local Detective Inspector, with wrinkled shirts and egg on his tie). The narrator's mother's matchmaking attempts were a bit heavy handed.

Still, there is a lot of room for growth in future installments of the series. I enjoyed the references to the Steiff animals.

An overcomplicated plot and a sanctimonious heroine I really found hard to like. I felt great sympathy with the mother - if I had a daughter like that I would have run farther than Devon to escape her „me and daddy know best what is good for you, you are just too stupid to see it“ attitude

It has everything I like in a cozy mystery: picturesque English countryside complete with a magnificent old building and garden; family drama and secrets everywhere!

I really liked the characters except David, Kat's boyfriend. Every time he said something I couldn't help but roll my eyes.

All in all, I'd recommend this book for everyone who loves a Midsomer Murders or Agatha Raisin like light read set in a small village in the country. I know I'm looking forward to reading this series!

5 stars for what it is: a cute, light, British cozy mystery. I like the characters enough to order book 2 today.

A fun beginning to a new cozy mystery series featuring Kat Stanford. Once her mom abandons London and their plans for an antique toy store, Kat ends up in Devon, mixed up in a family brouhaha over keeping an old estate intact. Murder and mayhem ensue. Looking forward to the next installment.

I randomly picked this up at the library, not expecting much, and really enjoyed it. The characters were funny and it was a good read. The mystery was secondary to the characters, but the best mysteries are that way.

Despite my love for murder mysteries and creepy English manors, this book was insanely bland with annoying characters and a semi-nonsensical plot.

If I hadn't been reading this for a book challenge I would have abandoned it, the lead character is extremely annoying, of all the characters that appear in the book she should have been the one that was murdered. The only good thing I can say about this book is that it was a quick read, I won't be rushing to read any more of this series.
