I went into this with too many specific expectations that were left unfulfilled. I felt that the relationship between the council siblings was heavily underexplored, and at times the story felt rushed. But in terms of diversity and creativity, this was one of the best YA novels I've ever read and it left me wanting more.

Surpassed my expectations! The world building is unique without being inscrutable. The main character faces numerous challenges in a manner that is both inspiring and believable. The story deflty spans personal relationships, politics, prophecies, magic, and morality, with a perfect segue into the second book.

This is a fantastic young adult novel. I had been struggling with getting started after picking it up from the library, but I think that's just because YA is no longer a category that appeals to me. In all fairness, I am in my thirties now.

This is genuine YA, in my opinion. There's no emphasis on spice or romance. There is romance, but it's not angsty or pining. Despite these things, I felt as though the characters were more mature than most of the others in YA. I was able to understand that the main character thought a boy was handsome without page long descriptions of his body and how it made her feel.

It's honestly just incredibly well written. Not perfect, but still excellent.

The world building is great and I enjoyed the depth of all the characters. I particularly appreciated that some characters were actually morally gray. I wasn't able to fully predict how everything would come together.

I would heartily recommend this to young people who are interested in fantasy. Perhaps my daughter will be interested when she's old enough.
