This was a colorfully woven tale that incorporates ancient mythology and different cultures, while touching on current issues in a fantastical way. Good character development as you’ll fall in love with Tarisai, Sanjeet, and Kirah! I’ll be waiting for the sequel...

Excellent. Was gripped from the very beginning. My only real complaint was that I wish we'd gotten to know the council more, but now it makes more sense why we didn't. Also, I wish I'd kept a tally for how many times I read "wax-dyed" because it was far too many 😅

4.5 stars. Wow, what a treat. I haven't read a book that felt this magical in awhile. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was top-notch. I loved the magic in the world and I love these African based stories as I feel like they have different myths and fairytales to build worlds than I am used to. Half melu (spelling?!?, basically like a genie) and half human, can Tarisai free herself from her mother's command to kill the prince - a young boy she has grown to love with all her heart? Read to find out, you won't be disappointed!

I do not know how to spell any of the absolutely wonderful and melodious names since I listened to the audiobook, but I will do my best! I was able to guess where the lion masks were a little before Tarisai and I assumed The Lady and the Emperor would end up dead, but I did not see "the how" coming at all. My jaw dropped. I loved the descriptions. I loved the romance between Tarisai and Sanjit, the friendship between Kira and Tarisai, and the family bond between T and Dayo. It depicted all kinds of relationships so well. This was simply a delightful read!
