Okay sorry to yell but THIS BOOK WAS SO PERFECT IN EVERY WAY PLEASE READ IT. Truly, I’m sad that I’ve finished it because now I have to wait years for the next one (I’m assuming there will be a sequel...there HAS to be a sequel...please Ifueko, keep writing, I need a gorgeous sequel to this absolute work of perfection).

✨ buddy read with may!
this is officially one of my most favorite reads of the year. it may also be one of the most well-written YA debuts i have ever read. i am in awe of this book.
I've only heard positive things about raybearer before i finally picked it up and it DEFINITELY DESERVES ALL THE RAVE REVIEWS. jordan ifueko has crafted a book with lush world-building, an intricate plot, beautiful prose, and great pacing. i also love the characters, especially the protagonist tarisai. raybearer also makes use of a lot of tropes in a more refreshing light. you think YA tropes are overused and repetitive? jordan ifueko will prove you wrong.
raybearer also explores the themes of love, friendship, and family impressively. i felt SO MANY THINGS while reading this book. with its plot twists and revelations, i really found it hard to detach myself from it when i had to study and take my exams.
I HAVE SO MANY THINGS THAT I WANT TO SAY BUT IT'S TWELVE AM AND MY BRAIN IS MUSH. here's the bottomline: this book is brilliant and everyone needs to read it. i can't wait for the sequel to destroy me with its greatness!

Female-led, black-led, and a m'fin ace character tossed in for good measure, yet never feels like representation just for representation's sake. Balanced characters and complicated, mature relationships--Technically YA, but never falls into the idiotic/painful tropes and interactions that seem the hallmark of the genre these days.

This book is SO GOOD! The word and mythology is dense and rich, with a world that is diverse without feeling like it tokenizes other cultures and centers Black characters and African culture, a needed change from Euro-centric fantasies. The character development is supported and believable, the plot moves along but isn't full of holes. A new twist on the "chosen one" trope that doesn't feel retread or overdone and Tarisai is so vivid and compelling. It's inventive, beautiful and gripping. I woke up early to finish it this morning because I couldn't stop thinking about it! Really, what more could you want from a new fantasy? I cannot wait for the sequel this summer.
