A stunning fantasy world. It was a bit of a slow start, more so that I would have expected for a YA fantasy, but it suits the story. I found the Ray really interesting as a mechanic, and I'm curious to see how our understanding of it changes with the circumstances of the second book!

3.5/5 stars

- I thought this story was really unique and unlike anything that I've read recently. I found it very political in the first half, which is why I'm giving this a slightly lower rating. I just personally felt like there was too much politics and I wanted a bit more action, but that's my personal preference.
- The cast of characters in this book were AMAZING! There were so many different characters and they were all woven together and described so beautifully, it was amazing! I can't even pick who was my favorite character, because I thought they were all great.
- The magic system in this book was so cool and unique. I just loved it! I'm really curious to see how it will expand in the next book, and I can't wait to find out more about the magic creatures that were introduced in this book.
- The world building was so extensive! The author did a really great job of setting up an incredible and diverse world, and I just loved how much of it we got to see. I'm excited to learn more about the history in the next book, because I feel like there is a lot we still need to learn.
- I loved the second half of this book, especially the last 150-200 pages or so, they were fantastic. Tarisai goes on such a journal in this book and I think she is such a pure and wholesome character. I just love her and can't wait to see how else she matures and changes in the next book.

Listen listen listen. I LOVED this book. 🎧 did the audio version. Will be buying a physical copy for my shelf. Hate that it was on my TBR so long

It’s more heavy in African folklore which I LOVE.

I like the messages it’s conveying. How you’re tested by your shadows inner demons and only way to deal is to face them head on.

Grappling with the legacies of parents and trying to figure out where that ends and you begin.  Figuring out family history so that you can see the stem of your trauma and sort through the madness.

The legit burning of books and histories under the guise of “assimilation” and - more “cohesive” nation versus what’s REALLY happening if one chooses to look.  Talk about timing with this one 😒…

How the author tied in the straight and tight maintence of hair as an effort of control but when you free it you free your self.

The symbolism was great in this book while still moving the story alone.

We saw parents that manipulate your love for them to still get what you want. We saw the fight of young adults of accepting they may never be who their parents want and that’s okay.

We saw the different versions of how love can present.

We saw how important it is to identify your unique gift (which could literally be anything) and working to use THAT to find your purpose in the world.

10 out of 10 for me. I refused to look at other reviews because I won’t have my excitement taken away from me! I won’t I won’t.

This book was hyped up pretty hard for me, and it pretty much lived up to it. I got thoroughly sucked into the world and its story, and I can’t wait to read the sequel. Bonus points for this being a duology btw, I LOVE a duology.

My main critique would be that something was off in the pacing. Sometimes things would resolve too quickly, other times solutions/problems would be obvious for way too long before the characters came around to realizing them, and when the characters caught up it would suddenly unfold too fast.

i thought that overall raybearer was a very good story !! there were some points in the writing style that i didn’t really vibe with but the story itself was good so that’s okay !!

the details closer to the end of the book about tarisai and her lineage were definitely a shock to me, what was revealed definitely wasn’t what i was expecting.

overall id say i give it a 4.5/5, though i’m definitely looking forward to the second one based off of how this one ended !!

THIS WAS SO GOOD! I really enjoyed the authors writing overall, the characters were interesting and complex, the plot moved along nicely while covering a lot of info and time without being overwhelming. Excited to read book 2!
