Predictability didn't make it bad, on the contrary!

I love teen heist/con books and this was the first book I've read dealing with the "after". I was skeptical going into this, I knew it wouldn't have the action of the first book and I was worried about how it would compare. Well this was fantastic. Grace goes through so much; she's been betrayed, she has to acknowledge her betrayals, she's alone, she has to learn to trust, and so on. I loved how realistic this was, no matter how sorry Grace was there are some things you can't come back from. She may not get the ending you want but ultimately she gets the ending that's right.

There a reason that I don’t typically read sequels of books unless it’s a brand new storyline. This book was a good wrap up of Grace’s story, but definitely slow paced compared to the first book. There was much less intense moments, I liked her interactions with Selena and wish there was more of a finale to that friendship. I went into the book thinking it would be very different and while I’m happy with Grace’s ending, I wish it had the same vibe as the first book. 3.5/5

I received this book as a giveaway from Epic Reads. I actually prefer this sequel to the first book. As a heist/con book, both of the books fall short of what I prefer to read. However, these are probably close to what actually working a con would feel like: the emotional turmoil, the split second decisions, and stress. The main character Gracie is attempting to make amends the only way she can after the con finished in the previous book: finding a way to get her foster brother Parker after being left to hang for the con. She meets and teams up with her foster father's mentor, their decision to find and hand him in fueled by how he used and abandoned both of them. In the process of tracking him down, Gracie comes to some peace with her past and finds people who can give her hope for the future.

Grade: C+

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: I love heist books. And I apparently really like characters named Grace. Grace Fontaine is a lovely character. She's done a lot of bad things, and she knows they were bad. She doesn't excuse all her actions, and she's trying to be a better person. Not many books show the fallout and consequences of big things like the crime the Fontaines tried to pull off in Lies I Told, so I appreciated what Promises I Made had to offer in that area. This book provided resolution in pretty much all the important areas - Grace's friendships, Grace's romantic relationship, and the loose strings in book one. However, in a lot of ways, this sequel was wholly unnecessary. The first part of the book was very slow and introspective - which can be good. However, I would have much rather seen Promises I Made in the same book as Lies I Told. Certain parts of both could have been cut and we'd all be better for it. A lot of Promises I Made was told in summary, so Ms. Zink could have even made it an epilogue to Lies I Told, or even a novella. Ah, well.
Bonus points, though, for Marcus and Scotty. They really cared for Grace, and I loved that.
There's a fair amount of f-words and s-words. Romance and violence were pretty much nonexistent, though.

The Verdict: Good, but honestly not necessary as an entire book.

Promises I Made finishes the Lies I Told duology. And to my surprise it almost got better. When I first picked this book up about a year ago I had trouble getting into the story. Yet, this time around I got pulled in and finished the series finale in maybe 5 or 6 hours(two or three of which involved me trying to read in a dark car). The stakes are a lot higher for Grace and her friends as she tries to get justice.

Content: Language- F-word a few times, h-word possibly. I can't remember what all was used.
Sexual: Mentions Grace and Logan previously kissing in the last book, mentions Cormac and the target Miranda doing things..., and a homosexual couple.
Violence: None that I remember.

Really liked it, I just hope we can know more about what happens to Parker after this book, and Logan.
