Maisie is asked to travel to Munich to rescue an inventor that the Germans have agreed to return to his daughter, from Dachau. In the process, she also agrees to try to get Elaine Otterburn to return to the baby she abandoned in England, putting herself at grave risk. Winspear never disappoints.
More on foreigners in Nazi Germany, British and American spies, intelligence in Nazi Germany.

Once again, thoroughly enjoyed Maisie Dobbs and her journey through life.
Maisie is sent to Munich to retrieve an inventor/publisher, who has been arrested and sent to Dachau. She goes in the guise of his daughter (who is ailing and can't go herself) as the Nazis will only release their prisoner into the hands of a family member.
The mission is secret, and takes her into Germany as the Nazis are poised to invade Austria. It is a dangerous and scary time and place to be, especially disguised as someone else.
As always, she learns a lot on this mission, about herself and about forgiveness and healing. As well as about the dangers confronting the world in the evil she meets in Germany.

More spy thriller than mystery, which I think is a good thing in this series. It's the regular characters that keep it worth reading. I'm still annoyed with the author for giving Maisie what felt like unnecessary misery, and (as often happens in series) the continued presence of the same people showing up in varying roles sometimes seems too coincidental, but overall a good read for fans of the series.
