Reading this alongside treatment for bulimia has been really helpful. The book being split into two was also a good move as the first half gives you information about bulimia, binge eating disorder and also anorexia. It gives information on what is the 'general' age people develop these eating disorders, how they manifest themselves, quotes and comments from people who have these eating disorder and general information which made me feel a lot less alone as my feelings and behaviours are very clearly shared ones. The second half of the book is focused on the treatment plan and how to move through this, with or without outside mental health help. It was comforting to know that the plan would be followed the same way whether you were an inpatient, outpatient or receiving no mental health support at all. I didn't read the book "cover to cover' so to speak. I found the first half quite triggering in parts and my key worker recommended that I moved onto the second half of the book where they are purely focused on treatment and I then later came back to the first half of the book. I have lent this book to family members and they have too found it helpful to read and understand more of the brain of someone with an eating disorder. I can defenitly see the change in langue that they use and there greater understand since reading the book. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has not only binge eating disorder but also bulimia or EDNOS. I am giving this 3 stars because it is a good book but the first half is very triggering in parts which I had to be very wary of which left me picking and choosing what parts of the book to read next. Still extremely helpful and I do recommend this book to friends and family as well as sufferers.

I read this book because I think I have a problem with binge eating. I am not sure if what I have qualifies as binge eating disorder, but I know I have a problem, and I've been trying to do something about it for a while. This book cropped up on my searches for self-help books about binge eating, and I decided I would give it a try.

My rating is mainly based on how clear and concise the information in the book was, how easy I feel it is to follow (being at the start of the program right now) and how enjoyable (if you can call it that) I found it to read. For a self-help book, it was an easy enough read. The writing is clear, and the advice is useful. It addresses the different types of binge eating, the causes and effects, and then moves on to the treatment. The treatment in this book is a self-help version of what the author has developed for use in therapy.

I am in the middle of week one so far, and while none of the advice is particular ground-breaking, it is structured in a way that I think will work for me. I may update this review at some point to rate the effectiveness of the advice given, as I'm not really qualified to rate on that aspect of the book just yet.

Overall, this I found this to be a very useful book about binge eating problems, and it has helped me come to terms a bit more with my own problem. In fact, it did make me a little emotional while reading some of the later chapters, especially the chapter on body image.

Borrowed this from my clinical supervisor. For both clinicians and people struggling with binge eating, the most relevant thing to note is that this book was published in 1995. While some things are still usable (e.g., his general plan for understanding and working on your own binge eating), other things are just wrong (e.g., we know now exactly how harmful yo-yo dieting and associated yo-yo weight loss/gain is--very). I'd strongly recommend Intuitive Eating instead.

Oooof as a therapist that specializes in binge eating - here are my thoughts:

I think it’s SUPER helpful the author laid out the characteristics of binge eating in the beginning. However, this material is DENSE. I can see someone looking for help to get so overwhelmed by the way this is laid out that they instantly put the book down.

As for the strategy to heal in part 2.. I agree with the structure, I agree with monitoring, but what I don’t agree with is the weekly weighing

This review is for the book and not the program as I haven’t finished it yet.

I found the book to be somewhat outdated, focusing on the old criteria for eating disorders instead of the current DSM-V ones. I also didn’t like how the author kept writing “his or hers” instead of just using “they” which is much more inclusive.

It was quite informative but I already knew most of the things mentioned in part 1 and thus was a bit disappointed by it.

I am giving the program a go and am on step 3. I do like that they included information on what to do if the program didn’t help, with an emphasis on the program failing us rather than us failing it.

For me, it was not helpful. I am in therapy for my eating disorder and thought this could be a good resource. It just didn't mesh with my therapist's way of helping me understand what I am doing to myself. That doesn't mean it can't be a great resource for someone else.

I thought this was a great book on binge eating that comes with a good treatment plan. However, this book was published in 1995. I would love to see an updated version with the new researched discussed.

Interesting self-help book which includes a full program to overcome binge eating. Took me a while to finish this book, i believe that is because i didn’t want to KNOW how to get better, so i wouldn’t have to. But i’m happy i finally read through all of it once. I want to apply the program, even though it seems quite complicated, and demands a hell of a lot of commitment. But that’s what it takes to heal.
