I don’t know if you can legitimately call a murder mystery “pleasant”, but, if you can, it’s the best way to describe this classic. The plot is tightly woven, and, just when you think you know who the murderer is, the author throws in a twist that proves you’re on the wrong track. Perhaps the most unusual feature is that the victim — Mr Smallbone — is so small that his body can be hidden in the equivalent of a banker’s box.

In the British library reprints. He is considered a really top author in the genre. I like the detective and the complex plot and vast array of characters that are so apt for the British culture of the era.
First time with this author. Enjoyed the characters and the legal aspects.

A wonderful Golden Age historical fiction mystery classic. When a large deed box is opened at a very respectable law firm and found to contain a corpse, the newest employee and Inspector Hazelrigg must figure out who Mr. Smallbone really was and how he ended up in a box. What is going on at Horniman, Birley, and Craine? Fans of Golden Age mysteries will thoroughly enjoy this novel.
I identified the murderer early, which NEVER happens with me, not even with Murder, She Wrote—ADHD (inattentive type, natch) is a bitch. But I still quite enjoyed this tidy British mystery, set in post-war London. Just the relaxed and undemanding read I needed.
I'm not familiar with the series but this worked as a stand alone fairly well. Bohun is interesting and the antics of a law office in post-war Britain had enough twists to keep the reader guessing. (But also, I had trouble telling apart some of the characters: there are so many people in this office and their names and mannerisms weren't distinct enough at least in the beginning.)
