I didn't know what I was getting myself into with this book and was very confused through the first part because I kept thinking it had really weird tone issues and the characters were more caricatures, but then it became clear the clever satire he was creating and things went crazy. Unlike anything I've read, makes important statements about lynching and racism, and strangely also brought some humor.

Really unique and lulls you into a false sense of security with how irreverent and fast paced this is and then suddenly you realise you are mired in the enormity of the history and brutality and now I need to stare at a wall for a bit.

Are novels about racism, lynchings, and mass killings supposed this to be funny?

I'd never read Percival Everett before and a bookseller friend recently told me how big a fan he is, so I sheepishly asked him for a good starting point, and this novel -- which is marvelous! -- is what he gave me.

If you're up for the snappiest, wittiest dialogue, a lively irreverence, and a foundation of sad truth, this is a read for you.

So this one kind of blew my mind, which is why it took me longer to read. A funny book abt the murder of Emmett Till? A satire of white supremacy? This would be that.

One of my favorite books ever; Percival Everett has cemented himself as one of my top authors. A must-read for everyone, a powerful story stemming from an abhorrent event.

This book was nothing like I had expected. I have never read this author’s work before. The book pulled off being wickedly funny about intense issues.

Chapter 64 is gut-wrenching once you understand the list. Just horrifying.

Highly recommended. It’s not an easy read but so well written.

The audiobook narrator was either fantastic or awful. I’d give the audiobook an above average score, but the quality was inconsistent.
