One of my favorite books ever; Percival Everett has cemented himself as one of my top authors. A must-read for everyone, a powerful story stemming from an abhorrent event.
This book was nothing like I had expected. I have never read this author’s work before. The book pulled off being wickedly funny about intense issues.
Chapter 64 is gut-wrenching once you understand the list. Just horrifying.
Highly recommended. It’s not an easy read but so well written.
The audiobook narrator was either fantastic or awful. I’d give the audiobook an above average score, but the quality was inconsistent.

A lot is in this book. History about race, murder, and racial murders is embedded in a mystery. The end touches on modern politics, making the point that little has changed and how buffoons who deserve so little have so much. The book leaves much to agonize about.

A murder mystery with an agenda, The Trees is fascinating and brilliantly written. Everett’s wit is as dry as a Churchill martini, and there are laugh out loud moments, but he also skewers racists, particularly those from Mississippi. If Hollywood were brave enough, this would make a great movie. But I doubt that will happen because it so smart, so haunting, and so profound.
